    I think I will try a 24" piano hinge with pop rivets. Seems like a very workable solution. Thank you for the idea.

    Thankfully it has not rusted all the way through. Still solid metal underneath the paint. Will clean that up with an angle grinder and then hit it with some high temp spray paint to prevent more rust.
