Never used a water pan because I don't want the build up of condensation from the water dripping from the lid back on to my meat, and have never had any complaints of my meat being to dry unless I cooked it too long.

That pretty much helped me decide, the rec tec sounds like its really a 3 year warranty with the added cost after 3 yrs. Think its yoder 640 for me after watching the serious competition folks using yoder on youtube think ill spend the extra and go yoder.
Im sure both are good, its like my gas...
Sounds like you may have seen sneakeey1's video on YouTube sneakeey1, That's What I Watched He Is Awesome.
I went with an additional vent on the bottom for a total of 5 after reading several posts here where guys wanted to get more heat, now I just need to research a wireless temp probe so I...

I'm a newbie but he also addresses that and says the weber lid fits close enough for the cook and only uses it on big cooks otherwise he removes the top grate and just uses the one 8 inches down from the top.

This was the best guy I have seen so far on YouTube , I watched all his videos on his build and learned the most, he is very personable which makes watching easy! He goes by sneakee1
Watch "Building my first Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS); from beginning to completion!" on YouTube
I would think from everything I've watched and read, you could put one close to fire but it would be used for a heat deflector only, I would and am putting two towards the top, 1 three inches from the top and the second one 8 inches from the top keeping them fairly close so they will be similar...
Question to anyone, I see that almost everyone building uses conduit nuts to fasten the air nipple vents to the uds, those seem to only come in galvanized from what I'm able to see at HomeDepot, gathering parts for a build and was wondering about this?
Ive seen a posting for adding a pellet rig to an uds anyone have any experience with this, I was looking at purchasing a rec tec pellet smoker, then saw the guy selling a pellet rig that bolts on to an uds for around 400 then ran across this foeum, now totally lost on what im going to do. Want a...
