    Not sure what you mean by 'basket'? It has a charcoal pan in the bottom, with a grate, like a normal grill. The pan is about 18" diameter, maybe about 6" deep, including the grate. I start it with a chimney starter, but I'm sure that isn't the cause of the low heat hours later. Images...
