Powder coating drum smokers?

Has anyone powder coated theirs and if so what's your experience so far?   I'm thinking about it for the next one i build...if that works well then i'll redo my current one..

It seems like it should work awesome if it holds up to the heat.

Just my 2 cents.  I have not powder coated a smoker but powder coating as I know it from the oilfield is zinc based.  Think galvanized.  What kind of gasses would be emitted I can't say.  Maybe someone with more experience will correct me.  Keep Smokin!

I used powder coating on many items as a HD mechanic .. Engine parts never melted or failed..

Cylinders, heads, rocker boxes, engine cases and side covers got very hot..

I even had a high temp flat black on a stainless exhaust that worked perfectly..

I was great friends with the powder coating guys in Atlanta..

They started out doing this for their own hot rod restorations and it evolved into a huge, successful business.

I worked on Terry bikes at my home shop and he always took great care of my powder coating..

I built two bikes that were completely powder coated..they are more than 10 years old and the powder is still perfect..

Applied correctly you should have no problems with a powder coated smoker..

The only issue would be cost..it is expensive....

Powder coating would only be on the outside....this is done all the time for grills just want to know how long  it lasts and if it's worth it.   1200 degree powder coat should do quite well on a smoker i'm thinking.

if you can do your own powder coating it is pretty cheap. if not it gets a little pricey. i have a Chraftsman powder coating gun. it works great. i don't have an oven big enough to put my UDS in to cure.

powder coating would hold up for a long time.

David i found a place just outside of town that only does powder coating and ceramic coating...75 dollars to strip and high heat powder coat the drum. The only colors they have have in high heat are black and silver but that's all good.  I'll be redoing mine with the powder coat soon, the downside is i'll be with out my smoker for 3-4 days. :(     That shows my addiction!

FWI if you go into withdraws. come on down. you can fire mine up and give it a test drive. it should turn out nice powder coated. look forword to seeing pics.

So if it takes a temp of 350 to 400 can you just powder coat it and use a burn out to cure it so the drum holds the temp so well?
