I have lined up four 250 gal. propane tanks for my church that I want to make into grills, this is to keep the project easier. My intent is to have no doors but an opening that would be cut at the half way line or maybe just under, on the side of the tank. This opening would extend most of the distance of the side but would be not as high, top to bottom, as most of the door openings that you see on smokers. I would like to have expanded steel grill surfaces that can be slid out, I need help on the design of these, as well as any other suggestions anyone may have. The dealer is taking all valves off and making them safe for us to work on, though safety will still be foremost on my mind.
I have a mill rite, also a welder by trade, and others experienced in welding. I'm too old to help a whole lot except to have in mind what we want to do. I have welded in a truck factory in the past as well as cutting, but it's been a while. I have never used a plasma cutter but I sure would like to give it a try.
Four grills you might ask? Well the thing is, the main reason I want to do this is to slow BBQ chicken halves, which will take about 2 hours and I want to get them all done at the same time, I'm figuring about 300 chicken halves, so that will take up some room on the grills. Actually I may only start out with three grills. I'm also thinking we can roast a couple hogs on them, might as well, since we would have the grills, right?
Any ideas how to add charcoal during roasting, I have thought of a narrow door in the back nearly the length of the grill, maybe 10 inches high, but that adds difficulty to the project.
Thanks for any help!
