Im just about done with my first UDS build and im ready to paint the bad boy....i wanna do a University of Kentucky theme....only problem is i cant find a true KY blue in high heat paint. Should i do the typical flat black with UK magnets or to a shiney silver? I just cant make up my darn mind....

Thanks Guys

Ryan

That looks pretty close to Ford blue to me. Don't know if engine enamel will stand the heat from a UDS, but it should be pretty close on color.

High heat paint is fine for a UDS. That's what I painted mine with.

But if you're only going to use it for smoking with temps below 250° and you're pretty sure you can keep it from running away on you

use what ever paint you can find. The outside doesn't really get that hot.

Here is a link to the Duplicolor High Heat Engine Enamel color chart.

That's the kind of paint I used on mine.

Slim,
Did you get that caster pic I sent you?

DDave is right dupilcolor HT. If you are confident in controlling the temps, any paint will work.
They don't offer many different shades of blue though in HT.
If you are really particular you can get HT paint from Sherwin Williams (ordered)
but it is $60 a gallon.
This is Ford blue if you think it is close enough. Seems a little dark for UK though.

FWIW, I bought the cheapest paint I could find at Wal-Mart. My drums have had little runaway episodes where they've hit 400* and I typically smoke between 250-300 and I've never had any issues with the paint being affected.

is yours the old ford dark blue or the ford blue....that the two they have at the auto store here....the cap makes it look darker than yours.....the regular ford blue is real like a light blue....Thanks alot....pm sent also

Yea, My buddy and I built this thing. We were pretty happy with the way it turned out. My budddy Griz and I built one for him at the same time with a Colorado Buffs theme; it came out pretty sweet as well. He is very close from completing it. He will post soon.

Let us know how yours turns out.

I used cheapo spray paint from the hardware store. The stuff that is like $1 per can. I went through about 3 cans to get a couple of nice coats. I have not had any trouble with chipping/peeling/bubbling of the paint. It has held up just fine.
