help me choose a smoker

I have been looking at this one http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...SSSELL_PRODUCT

But they also have a smaller one made by the same company for about 40 dollars less. The main difference i see between the two (other than the size) is the bigger one comes with a nice heavy cast iron chip box. What am I missing? help me justify the extra $$$$$.

I am also open to other ideas in that price range.

Edited because I can't type smaller one is less

I didn't see the smaller GOSM on the BPS website, but I am aware that they make a smaller model of the one you linked to. Unless I misunderstood, you said the smaller one was $40 MORE than the big one? Maybe someone else has some insight to offer, but from what I know of that series, the smaller model is usually about $40 less than the big one. Its possible the bigger model was overstocked and on sale. Either way, I would say get the larger model that you linked to. I have a Perfect Flame 36"Hx14"Wx14"D I think, and it can be a little small. The biggest issue for me is the width. I can barely fit a rack of ribs in mine diagonally, whereas, the GOSM can easily fit two lengthwise on the same rack. The extra size will come in handy if you're catering a party.

As far as the cast iron wood chip box is concerned, that is exactly what you are looking for. Those are much better than the cheaper tin ones that come with a lot of propane smokers. From what you said, my recommendation would definitely be the bigger model (36"H x 24"W x 16"D), especially if it is the cheaper option.

I can only speak for myself, but whenever you're considering a smoker, go bigger than what you think you'll need. The GOSM big block would always be my choice/

I have the smaller GOSM. I love it!! Just wish it was the bigger model. You can't go wrong with the GOSM.

My 2 cents: Go Bigger! You won't be sorry you spent the extra 40. Those smaller rigs are hard to get a full rack of ribs in. The cast iron chip box is less of an issue, because you may find it is too small and you'll want to replace it with something bigger anyway (which is what I did).

I also have the small GOSM and now I also have a smoke vault 24" you need to sick with the larger one believe me you will like it alot better.

Bigger is always better, like others have said easier to fit full rack of ribs.
Also I find my self putting ABT's on one shelf, fatties on other etc.
plenty of room..

I think I remember someone saying the first thing to do is get rid of the heavy metal chip box and replace it with a cut down coffee can because it takes forever and a half to get the wood to start to smoke, I believe his name was Jeff or something like thaticon_smile.gif

I would go with the larger one as well. Seems when we buy a smoker we never figure we'll fill it up and the next thing you know we're out of room in the smoker and looking to upgrade. If I were to buy a new propane smoker today it would either be the 24" wide GOSM or the 24" wide Smoke vault
