I've read through several other threads describing different problems and possible fixes to MES's shutting off periodically, and wanted to get y'all's take on mine.  I've had my MES 40 (gen 1 I think) for a little less than a year and smoked somewhere around 6 or 7 briskets, a few racks of ribs, a pork shoulder and some chicken quarters.  Everything has worked great up until last week when I went to smoke some chicken quarters.  The entire smoker kept shutting off and I realized the power outlet kept tripping off and I had to go into the garage to press the reset button on the GFCI outlet.  I had just smoked a brisket over the previous weekend and the smoker worked flawlessly for 19.5+hours!  I couldn't figure out what suddenly changed.  I talked to Masterbuilt and they said it sounds like the heating element is causing the problem and are sending me a new one.  Do y'all think this could be the culprit?  I'm just wondering if the short could be in the control panel somewhere as it is suddenly causing a few minor problems too.  Half the time I have to turn the smoker on with my remote, as the on/off on the control panel won't work.  Once the unit is on, the entire panel works fine, but the initial power on seems to be finicky.  Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there and welcome!

It could be any number of things.  The weakest spots of the MES are the wiring connectors to the heating element (plus the ground connector) as well as the connectors to the safety Rollout Limit switch.

After the connectors, I believe the next weakest part reported is the controller itself.

The only way to check for sure is to start checking the connectors.

Start with the heating element and check both wire connectors AND the ground connector.

Then you will likely need to remove the backing or cut a square section of the backing off to get to the roll out limit switch and check it's connectors.

Once connectors are verified then you can move on from there.  Having a multimeter to check for wire continuity and to be able to check the resistance of the heating element will be a huge bonus.  You never know if a wire's insulation was frayed or may have even come apart at some other point besides the connectors.  The multimeter would help with this.

After all of this feel free to report back with what you find and best of luck :)

Thanks for the reply.  I took the heating element out last night and both connectors and the ground look fine.  I'd love to not need to remove the entire back panel and/or cut out a section to inspect the rest, but it may come to that.  My new element should arrive tomorrow and maybe the stars will align and that fixes my problem.  If not, I'll begin surgery on the smoker.  Thanks again for the input.

FYI, if you are replacing your heating element I GUARANTEE that the connectors will break off when disconnecting the wire from the heating element.  You may as well buy some Supco T1111c hi temp stainless steel connectors and get them on now rather then having to revisit the issue later.  If you use normal connectors to replace the ones that are about to break off then they are likely to corrode too.

Best of luck :)
