Today we took a wrong turn and had a (mis)adventure with Shrimp on the Barbie...

No, seriously...

 

I got my grubby hands on some 20/22 shrimp, on sale for $5.00/lb, and decided to make a surf 'n turf dinner.

 

Having purchased a whole NY Strip a week or so ago, this made the perfect combination for a quick 'n easy meal on the rusty 'n dusty kettle. I had to wait for the rain to stop before I could really begin cooking with fire... :th_violent5:

 

 

 

A little prep, ahead of time, made this a 20 minute meal.

 

 

 

Surf 'n Turf Dinner

 

The Turf Portion

 

This was the easy part...

 

The NY steaks were already cut and ready for a liberal amount of a simple seasoning...

 

...salt, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic and onion...

 

...nothing fancy... 241.png

 

 

 

 

And onto a hot grill over high, direct heat...

 

 

 

 

After roughly 4 minutes a side and an internal temperature of 115(first actual use of my ThemoPop :yahoo: ), I moved the NY steaks to a cooler section of the grill to finish...

 

 

 

 

The Surf Portion

 

For me, the most difficult part of preparing shrimp is removing the shells and deveining. It's not technically difficult, just time consuming. 

 

With the help of time lapse photography, we zoom ahead to the final prep of the shrimp... :cool:

 

I added a little fresh cracked black pepper, salt and a squeeze of fresh lime...

 

 

 

 

A little brushing of an experimental tomato, honey and roasted garlic sauce and we're ready for the grill... :grilling_smilie:

 

 

 

 

With my NY steaks just about done, it's time for the shrimp to hit the barbie...

 

 

 

 

A nice char and time to flip the shrimp over... 

 

 

 

 

Half of the shrimp all done in as little as 2 minutes... 

 

...nested in with the resting NY's... :drool

 

...and the second group of shrimp on the grill...

 

 

 

 

Everything up the stairs and get it all together on a plate for dinner...

A fun, change of pace side dish...

 

 

Street Style Corn

 

I picked up some ears of corn( a little early in the season but the sign claimed it to be grown in CA jaw-dropping.gif )...

 

The husk was partially removed, so I decided to remove the rest of the husk and silk...

 

 

 

 

Added a squeeze of fresh lime...

 

 

 

 

...couple of shakes of my favorite chili powder...

 

 

 

 

...fresh grated parmigiano reggiano and a little unsalted butter...

 

 

 

 

...wrapped and ready to go onto the indirect side of the rusty 'n dusty kettle to steam...

 

 

 

 

So simple, even I can do it... :icon_mrgreen:

With the addition of a baked(nuclear style from Chef Mic(rowave) potato with unsalted butter, sour cream and fresh from the garden chives...

 

We have our Surf 'n Turf dinner...

 

 

 

 

 

And for the final course...

 

...lest we forget...

 

A scoop of 50/50(orange sherbet/vanilla) over fresh cantaloupe...

 

 

 

 

As always, we're roughin' it in the Santa Cruz mountains, sfprankster style... :rotflmao:

For me, it's all about quick and simple during the week. If I have the time, the WSM gets the workout, but today, the rusty 'n dusty kettle took center stage.

They're so quick this way. Just have to be careful not to drop them through the grate. I usually use skewers for the shrimp. But, since the move, I still haven't found(unboxed) all my smoking toys.

I usually use skewers too. Just haven't found and unloaded the box they're in, from our recent move. :33:

 

When I do find them, makes the entire process sooooo much easier. :thumbsup:

 

I went simple on the seasoning since I'm still in the test mode and making adjustments with the sauce. Once I have the sauce recipe dialed in, I'll go with a much more vibrant blend of spices.
