My name is Johnny and I live in Lincoln Illinois.  I have just gotten into competition cooking.  I use a treager pellet grill with a smoke daddy pid controller and a downdraft smoke hood.  I also use a pitmaster pellet smoker with a smoke daddy pid controller also with a downdraft hood.  the hood really helps keep the temps stable and seems to keep the smoke in the cooker longer.  I have been in 4 backyard cook offs.  two of the four I got calls on my food.  this july I got 3rd in chicken and 5th in ribs out of 29 teams, and last weekend I got first in chicken and wasn't given a score sheet to see how I did on my ribs.  I am looking to get into charcoal/stick cookers by next year so I can compete a little better.  I will be happy to lend any advise I can give and look to pick peoples brains on some issues.

Johnny, I'm new to the site also also new to comp bbq. My question to you is I'm wanting to go pellet for comp and your wanting to go stick. Is there a reason why you want to change? I want to go pellet so I can set it and be able to take a nap on the late cooks and not have to worry. One comp I do is two days so a nap is very well needed.

Im not sure about the higher end pellet grills, but the lower end gills have bad temp swings.  that can be taken care of by adding a pid cotroller and a down draft hood.  I wouldn't mind having a yoder 1500 and a medium sized cabinet smoker so I have the best of both worlds.  Humphreys smokers does build a cabinet grill with a pellet option though.  some competitions don't offer electricity and kinda frown on the use of generators.  its just something I want to try really.

I've got a Yankee stick burner which is great, but that 10am turn in on a brisket or butt is hard to relax at night, when your worried about temps falling or spiking......hardly do they ever but I still worry. I was thinking a pellet grill would be more of a set it and catch a nap LOL
