Shipping summer sausage?

Any of you ever shipped SS this time of year?  Is it safe to ship unrefrigerated?

Depends on how long it's going to take to get where it's going. I send stuff to my cousin. It takes two days. Usually I send it frozen, and when he gets it it's still frozen. It's vac packed and then I wrap it in newspaper then pack in box. If there's enough room I'll add more paper.

Another way is to find a Supermarket ( like Miejers) that sells Dry Ice  . Wrap well to keep from getting burned by the ice , and ship with Mr. Brown...

Case and Stan have you covered. I ship all the time. I also take it backpacking and have to get it out early to thaw.

Happy smoken.

Thanks guys.  I've never frozen any SS and was hesitant to do so fearing it would affect the quality.

I freeze practically everything, and they say it can affect the quality, but I never noticed any affect on anything, except on cheese.

The first cheese I smoked, years ago, I froze some. I won't be doing that again.

Properly made fermented and dried summer sausage doesn't require refrigeration. Most of the stuff that folks call summer sausage these days is too wet to not spoil without refrigeration.

I don't make my own SS, but the above post does make sense.  Makes me think of the Hickory Farms SS.  They don't seam to have a problem keeping it at room temps.  Don't know.

Let me add that dry ice is good for ground transport. it's illegal to ship it by air..
