New smoker build

I am as you know, still in the design stage. I was working in the fb design and would like to have an ash pan with a dedicated door for the ash pan. Is the area that contains the ash pan to be included in the fb dimensions or would the ash pan be extra. So my firebox will be 36 in cubed. If I want my ash pan to be 4 in tall, would the dimensions of my fb change from 36 in cube to 36" wide by 36" long by 40" tall? I haven't yet decided how my smoker will be laid out on the trailer. I think I like the suggestions of having doors on both sides of my cc but I won't know if it will be feasible to have doors on both sides. I have a wish list of things that I would like on the smoker that I will work into the build if I can and doors on both sides is definitely going on it. Keep the ideas and comments rolling. With this being my first actual build, I need all the help I can get lol. Also I need suggestions for my doors, both fb and cc and ideas on the best door design and sealing it up and gasket material etc. Once again, thanks for all the help guys
 
As for putting bearings on racks... I don't believe it's a good idea.. reason being... once they get fill with grease and fat you'll have a hard time getting them to roll... mainly when they are cold... the grease and fat will freeze them up... justa thought
 
You don't need em  racks will slide just fine, just leave a little play when you'r building them.

I didn't think about the grease from smoking gumming up the bearings. That's why I need yall to think of stuff that I don't lol
 
I am thinking that instead of going with 1/4" steel, that I might go with 1/8" steel plate on the fb and insulate it. Anyone have any thoughts?
 
I would go with 1/4" for all of the inside of FB you can go go lighter for the skin I would use 2" mineral wool  works great

Im not gonna beat a dead horse but i agree with all the above.

I used the 2" mineral wool on my current build too. Definitly recommend it.
 
Ok so use 1/4" on the inside and then like 1/8 for the skin on the outside of the mineral wool. Would u guys go thinner than that for the outside skin or would u stick with 1/8"?
 
I went 1/4" inside and out but you could go with 1/8" on outside and be fine i just always tend to overbuild. I wouldnt go any thinner tho.
 
I am thinking we went a little thinner, probably because that is what we had laying around. I need to ask #2 son what we used his memory is better than mine  "getting old CRS kicking in

Does anyone know of a way to put a propane fire starter in a fb with an ash pan? I have heard of people drilling holes in pipe and inserting that in the fb. My concern is it getting stopped Up by the ashes from burning wood. I would like some type of setup that I can leave in there all the time because if I had to remove it, that would be one more piece to keep up with and I am very forgetful! Lol
 
I think Ribwizzard could probably shed some light on that.

Anything you put in the firebox is not going to last, so as long as your good with having to replace it every so often....... Small slices cross wise on a length of schedule 80 black iron pipe, with the slices turned downward would work about the best.

I'd rethink about just buying a small weed burner for $30 bucks or so and use that to start the fire.
 
Weed burners work great, been using one for a long time.  RW have a good R & R ?
