I did a search and could not find a definitive answer. I just got into smoking am I am not ready to start mod's just yet.

It seems that the 5X8 AMNPS fits perfectly between the chip tray and the left wall under the water pan. I posted a pic. Is this the best location or should I place it somewhere else?

I would like to do the same thing placing the AMNPS inside the smoker but I think it will not burn correctly. Please let me know what you find out.

Cheers

I will add always leave the top vent 100% open and that you should pull the chip drawer out at least an inch, this help Oxygen to get to the AMNPS. I also pull the loader out 1-2 inches but push it back in after 30 minutes. While this too helps increase air flow, I have found it does too good a job and the Pellets burn too fast...JJ

Yes, like Red said, the 5 X 8 AMNPS was designed for that spot in the picture above. In fact, I had an MES 30 at the time Todd was designing it, and he called me & asked me to measure the space in mine. He wanted to make sure the AMNPS would fit there in all MES 30s. That's why it fits perfectly there, because of Todd's prior research and planning.

If I remember correctly, with the original AMNS, if you wanted to put it in the bottom, you had to remove the bottom drip pan, and put it under those support rods, because they were a full 6" wide.

If I ever have air flow trouble, I will try pulling the chip dumper out some, but I have found that if I get it lit properly, I don't have to mess with the Gen #1 MES 40 components.

So I gave the AMNPS a trial run with a single rack of BB ribs. I used the 2-2-1 method. I lit the AMNPS with a butane mini torch and hit it with a heat gun and got it going real good. I placed it in my MES As pictured above.
I checked the AMNPS at about the 45 minute mark and was shocked to see that it was out. Since I only had an hour and 15 minutes before it was time to foil I dumped a load of Hickory chips in the tray and let them smoke until the 2 hour mark.
Since this was a trial run I really wanted to get my AMNPS going. I remembered a post that said to leave the chip loading tube open a little so it can get a little air.
So after I foiled the BB's and got them back in, I re-loaded the AMNPS, lit it with the torch and got a real good cherry with the heat gun. I put it back into place and pulled the chip loading tube out a few inches left it alone until the 2 hour mark.
The AMNPS was smoking like a champ. I'm know the foil kept the smoke out the BB's so I didn't care. I know that it works and what I need to do to keep it going.
I can't wait to smoke the 12lb brisket I have. It is going to be so nice to set it and forget it.

Started a Boston Butt last night using my AMNPS for the first time and 11 hours later its still smoking! Put the pellets in a bowl and nuked them to reduce moister content. Add oak to the bottem with wiskey barrel on the top. Started the pellets with the torch and placed in per the everyones suggestions. I was concered for 10 or 15 minutes as the pellets still had a small flame but the flamed died down and the smoke started. Top vent is 100% open side chip loader is 2" out from the side.
