Hi my name is Rich and I live in Rhode Island.  I have been smoking for less than a year but I have smoked several different foods.  I am on my second smoker thanks to my dog because she knock it off the deck and it is all out of shape.  It is a bullet smoker.  I now have a Brinkmann, square upright charcoal type with double doors.  I have smoked chicken, pulled pork, and ribs.  I am in the process of making some modifications because the coals are not getting enough air to get a good burn (would appreciate any suggestions).  It's a cheap unit, $70 for Walmart, but I am still learning and will get a better model when I master the smoking process.  Just happen to come across this site when I was surfing the net.  I went to a hot air balloon festival here in RI and by change found they were having a smoker cook off.  Everyone was great and gave me several tips.  I look forward to join in with some of the threads.

to SMF!  We are so glad you joined us! I started out with an Electric Brinkman....was a cheapo...and I wanted to make sure I was going to enjoy smoking foods.  I am hooked!

We love to see pictures of what you are cooking (or what we call q-views here at SMF).  To "upload the q-views" just follow the directions here and it will be easier. If you are using a cell phone, an IPad or a kindle, go to the main SMF page and click the Mobile button. Will make the uploads a bit faster too.

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums and some guidelines of how to interact within the forums. Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

If you need any help roaming around the forums....just holler!  Happy to help out!

Welcome!  I struggled with the Brinkman upright two door for a couple of years and it wasn't until I discovered this place that I started getting good results with it.  Use the search engine with "brinkman two door" or several variations and you will find tons of info and mods for them.

I drilled good sized holes at two levels all the way around the charcoal pan and now set it in the bottom of the smoker and not in the rack where it is "supposed" to go.  Try filling the water pan with sand and cover with foil to help with temp swings.  If you use water in it, it is very difficult to get the smoker above 220° or so.  DO NOT go by the thermometer in the door!  It is junk and reads way off.

Guys on here recommend the Maverick digital with two probes

Good luck and post up some Qview of your next cook or you will get grief about it

Welcome to the forums, Rich!  This is the best place I know for sharing ideas on smoking, grilling, curing, etc.  There are plenty of friendly, knowledgeable folks who really enjoy helping one another.  Just ask when you need help and someone here will have the answer.
