I plan on making shagbark hickory baked beans this weekend.  Can someone tell me how to do this using the amns. I was hoping to have a smoked flavor and wanted some input how to do this. If I put them on the grill fire up the tube smoker and cover the beans with foil I dont see how the smoke flavor will get to the beans.

All you great cooks can surely help me out.

Thanks!

The Recipe and instructions would help. There typically is no need to cover beans in a smoker however if trying to cook from raw beans there may be adjustments needed...JJ

1 small package navy beans
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup hickory syrup
1/2 cup chili sauce
4 slices cooked bacon, broken into pieces
Salt and pepper

METHOD

Cook beans until soft. Add remaining ingredients in order mix and pour into bean pot or large casserole. Bake in slow cooker over 325° for 4 to 5 hours. Double the
recipe for a larger amount.

OK, Interesting recipe, I never heard of Hickory Syrup. The beans will be fully cooked now you will be just infusing Flavor and getting them to the butter soft texture that we enjoy with Baked Beans. You can smoke it in the grill uncovered stirring occasionally and adding a little bit of water as needed to maintain the moisture and level. You just need to control your temps so you don't get too hot. Additionally you will want Indirect heat, light one side and put the beans on the other. You also have the option of splitting the cook. Cook covered for 2-3 hours then Smoke the remaining 2-3 hours. Depends on how Smokey you want them...JJ

? hickory syrup is that like liquid smoke (yuk)  I smoke the beans in the last two hours of a smoke I like to put them under my pork shoulders and let the drippings mix in with the sauce.

I suggest you try Dutch's Wicked Baked Beans.

Use the search bar above to find it.

It is absolutely delicious and works well in the smoker with the AMNPS.

I substitute a large can of chunked pineapple and add more jalapenos

to the recipe.
