I have a great friend who has been doing some "new diet" fad.  You have to go though a series of injections and have some ultra strict diet.  After the injections, you can eat anything but carbs for a period of weeks.  He just started the no carb portion and has begged me to make him some ribs and hot BBQ sauce but here is the kicker: it cant have sugar.  The ribs I think that I can handle, but I am at a total loss on the sauce.

I am diabetic also, so I fully understand!  Here's a recipe I've used before; this is the link, I don't want to disregard or not credit the poster:

http://www.thesweetdiabetic.com/the_sweet_diabetic/2010/05/no-sugar-barbecue-sauce-recipe.html

There is a very small amount of sugar in the 8 oz tomato sauce that's prevalent in tomatoes, but it is otherwise sugar-free.

Just add the type of heat you want - crushed red pepper, cayenne, etc.

And, we also have a full thread on it too!

Here's one that ain't bad.......

Sugar -Free Barbecue Sauce

2 strips of thick bacon, chopped fine (or see note)
1 small onion, minced
1 clove garlic, minced or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 small can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 can (12 oz) diet (sugar-free) cola - Splenda-sweetened preferred
1/4 cup low carb (sugar-free) catsup, (or see note)
3 T mustard
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch ground cloves
Hot sauce to taste
Preparation:

Note 1: If you prefer to leave the bacon out, add 1-3 teaspoons of liquid smoke, to taste, near the end of the cooking. Alternatively, add some smoky flavor using 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika, or chipotle powder to taste.

Note 2: If you can't find low carb catsup, leave it out, but add about a tablespoon of vinegar and some sweetener, to taste.

1) Fry the bacon in a saucepan - a 2 qt pan works well.

2) Add the onion and cook over medium until soft - 3-5 minutes. Add garlic at this point if you're using fresh and stir it for half a minute or so.

3) Add the rest of the ingredients, plus about half a cup of water. Stir well. 4) Simmer for 20-30 minutes. It will cook down a bit and flavors will combine. 5) Adjust the seasonings so you have the balance you want - you can add vinegar, artificial sweetener (liquid preferred), or hot sauce. (If it's too hot, adding more sweetener will tone it down.)

The recipe makes approximately 10 servings of 1/4 cup each. Each serving has about 3.5 grams of carbohydrate plus 1 gram of fiber.

My recipe for sugar-free ketchup....

1 can chopped tomatoes (28 oz)
1 can tomato paste (6 oz.)
1 large chopped onion
1 cup rice wine vinegar (unsweetened)
1/2 cup sugar equivalent
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 pinches ground allspice
2 bay leaves
a sprinkle or two of salt (or fish sauce) and pepper

Combine all ingredients in sauce pan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Continue cooking until the mixture reduces by half, about 45-60 minutes. Puree until smooth with a food processor.

Martin, That Ketchup Recipe sounds really good. Is it anything close to Heinz? It would be cheaper to make my own, Ketchup is considered a Vegetable by the kids, they put it on everything...JJ

@ Solar : Yep its HCG?  Im not real fond of the diet.  I just dont think it has been studied enough.

@ Digging: I will try your sauce recipe this weekend and let you know how he likes it...who knows, I may change my BBQ sauce.  Just don't tell my 10 year old son...he thinks his dad's secret sauce is the best ever.  I have one fan.

Thanks everyone
