I went from an offset firebox smoker to a Masterbuilt XL propane smoker last year. I was looking for something that I didn't need to baby sit. The XL does a good job but I still have to watch the temperature pretty close especially on a hot day. I am afraid to use it for an overnight smoke. It seems the older I get the more lazy I get. I have been reading a lot about electric smokers on this site. It seems most owners like the units and use them for overnight smokes so I would like to try one. Have been looking at the MES 30 & 40. Which one do I want and where is the best place to look fro a reasonable price? I am used to a large smoker with the XL I now have, but I never fill it up. This is a great web site and I appreciate everyone's help.

Most folks will tell ya to get the 40..

I have a 30 and it works just fine for the 2 of us and when I feed people...up to 6.

Get an amazen too.

Got mine off Amazon..less than 200 delivered.

  Have a great day!!

What Al said:

MES 40 Black exterior with SS windowed door, and all stainless inside for $299.

OR

MES 40 All SS inside & out from Cabelas $349 to $399 depending on the deal.

Both of them have remote control, wheels, and 1200 watt element.

Since you're used to the XL, you'd like this one best.

The 1200 watt element is the real clincher---no long recovery.

I have one of each---Never use the MES 30 any more.

Hey Barry,

I have a propane GOSM that has a PID controlled 700W heater strip (that I just upgraded to 1250W) so hopefully, my wattage friends, you will consider me   qualified to respond, ...from what I've read I'd go with the 40 (short, sweet and simple annnd because of what the above have mentioned)

...however, I said all of that to say this, my GOSM fitted with a needle valve, all the holes filled with hi-temp silicon and sitting in the shade holds temps rock steady from 160° to 350° all day or all night with a full tank of propane and the Maverick lo temp set to warn me if there should be a flame out (hasn't ever happened), I don't know what the difference is between the Masterbuilt and the GOSM, but I wouldn't give up on it yet, if it's possible to modify the Masterbuilt you would have the best of both worlds.

And yes I'm old and lazy too,

Gene
