I'm in need of a little help here please. I need to purchase a new smoker. I currently have a mes 30 that I've had for about 6 years and it's worked flawlessly for me, I couldn't be more pleased with it. I'm doing a wedding and a couple big parties this summer so it's time to step it up. I want decent capacity, around 1000 I don't want to spend all day babysitting it. I considered a MES 40 but the reviews on the new ones scared me away, I think it's time to try an alternate fuel so I can be more portable. I live in Montana and smoke through the winter so insulated and/or thermostatically controlled is a plus. I'm liking the gravity fed idea like Stumps but the price is way above what I can afford. I don't have the time or facilities to build my own so that option is out. used is fine if it's the right one. the budget is under $1000.00 and the further under the better. I've read dozens of reviews and it can be overwhelming, there are pluses and minuses to each one. fire away, Please give me your recommendations based on experiences. Thanks.

I'm a huge WSM fan but for a grand I'd probably go with a Big Green Egg. It should be able to handle winter smoking in Montana with ease too. I know, I know charcoal doesn't have the reputation for being "set and forget" but when they are set up properly they can chug along on their own for quite a while.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority here, but the best "bang for the buck" I have come across is the Smoke Hollow 44 propane smoker that's sitting in my driveway.    Yeah, it's a gasser but it still makes great tasting Q, and it has a stupid capacity.   Can easily fit 10  12lb butts in it with plenty of room between each butt.

    Here's 10 butts:

    Here's  16 Sirloin Top roasts:

And somewhere around I have a pic with 8 racks of spares, 3 10lb boston butts and 2 8lb Prime Ribs.  Just having a little trouble finding the pic.

Oh, and the best part ?  The Smoker is $279 at Sams.

Drawbacks would be that it's not thermostatically controlled and it's not insulated.
