I'm new to this forum and fairly new to smoking. I'm from Wichita Ks, and I own a Lil Tex Traeger. I'm not sure I would actually call it a smoker. I hope I can say that without offending but since I own one I think its fair. Its easy and convenient but I don't get the results I would like. The meat tastes great but there is no charred bark, no smoke ring and almost no smoke flavor. I have used it for butts, ribs, turkey steaks burgers and so on. Its like grilling to me only a lot slower. I'm looking for a traditional smoker with a fire box under, at the end or a reverse flow. Too many options out there and I cant make up my mind. I'm looking forward to every ones help and apologize ahead of time for asking questions that have been asked a hundred times. I will try and find them in past post's but that can be tough at times from other forums I have been a part of.

WELCOME Dave.  Enjoy all the resources here, and super helpful people if you have questions.  Lots to see and learn.  Send photos when you can, people love to see other people's efforts.

The bark is created from heat caramelizing the fats over time,  I guess since the Traeger doesn't create the intense heat for an extended time.  My friend loves his, but I use a smoker, personal preferences are OK.

Look at the various builds, and you might get some excellent ideas about building your own, or what you want to do.

Good luck either way.
