Well Hurricane Ike hit us here in KY today and we have 125,000 homes without power including the palacial SG estate. ;) Once the winds died down I fired up the smoker and did some cooking for the family and some neighbors and friends. got stocked up on ice and hooked up the generator to the fridge to keep things cold. I have some pics but need to refuel the generator and get everything else iced down or refrigerated. Back with Q-view in a bit.

Thanks CG we're doing ok here just no power. It may be days before it is restored because of the amount of damage and a lot of our crews are in TX and LA helping out there. We had 60 mph wind with 70 - 80 mph gusts. I've never seen anything like it here and I've lived here all my life.

Anyway with no AC the smoker came in handy and I needed to cook some of this meat anyway to make room for ice. Rubbed the shoulder with Lysanders spicy bourbon rub and the loin with their pork rub. Wrapped em up and into the cooler while I started the fire. Got temp to 240 and got things smokin, mopping with an apple juice/Jim Beam mix every 45 min or so....

Took the shoulder to 140 then foiled and to 200. Took it off and rested it, then cut in in half divided the juices refoiled one half and took it to the neighbors. I sliced the other half for the wife and kids and basted it and refoiled it while the sides were finishing up.....

That spicy bourbon rub is really tasty.

Got the bakers and beans on with the loin. I had the loin on the end of the pit where temps were running around 225 - 235 because of wind and it took a little longer to get to the target temp. I took it to 145 and foiled it then back on and just to 150. Rested the two halves and took half to another neighbor. sliced our half and served it with SG beans and loaded bakers. First loin turned out really well. and the neighbors were "delighted" (pun) as well.....

Thanks for checking out my Qview. One positive from this is I'm going to have a lot of oak and I dont have to climb to cut it. :)

Thanks guys and thanks for the points ron. We're hanging in there ok and although we're still out of power we are making the best of it. It's almost like camping out but doing it in your house. There are a few places around that do have power but as you can imagine those areas are swamped with people getting ice, supplies and such. I went around the neighborhood and checked on the older folks that live around me before making a trek to one of the few walmarts that does have power. Loaded up on batteries and canned goods, no flash lights or battery lanterns left anywhere though so I couldn't help there. I have rechargeable 18v work lights myself and have been making do with those. I use a power inverter in my truck to charge those. I am mainly running the fridge on the generator and am going to costco to pick up a small freezer. I found an "Ice Hut" right here in town that for some strange reason has power. It had gone out of service during the storm but I called the owner and he came out and got it restarted. I loaded up the pilot with 10 16 lb bags and headed home. Took a couple bags to each neighbor and put 1 in my cooler and 1 in my freezer. I only have 2 bags of RO left and 1 18 lb bag of Brikets. I'm going to a different walmart later when I get to costco and see if they have RO. If not I'll get what I can then fill up the gas cans for the generator. Looks like I'll be doing a LOT of smoking the next few days. I'll check in here when I can.

    Take care everyone,

That shoulder looks fantastic! Rub does sound good, is it something you can buy off the store shelves or special order?

Your Qview looks great, and considering you guys got hit pretty good too, you seems to be hanging in there okay. Nice of you to help your neighbors out too, good luck and hope you get power back on soon.

Looks like leftover pork loin and beans for dinner tonight. I fired up the ECB and am heating everything up on there. Also whipped up some stuffing to go with the pork and heated up some canned corn. we're gettin by ok. They're saying it may be 7 to 10 days untill all power is restored and there's 550,000 people out of power statewide. YIKES!!!![IMG]

Well we're down to two families left on my street. Everyone else has left and gone to stay with relatives or in hotels. We're still camping out though and everyone is bored to death without TV or Electric. It's kinda peaceful actually except for the steady hum of the generator. I'll check back in later and see if chat is working. Take care guys n gals.

  16. great looking food there you represent what a good neighbor should be. a lost trait nowadays! keep safe [IMG]

    Smoking Gun...

I know you are pretty busy most of the time right now (I know cause I went thru an F-2 Tornado 3 yrs ago). It seems that all waking hours are consumed by things you must do. Anyway, just wanted to say "hang in there", because I know every day that passes makes everything you do a little more easy. It seems hard at first because you aren't doing much out of whim or by choice...you do what you have to do, because that's all there is for you to do. Every move you make is because you have to do it. Yeah, it definately sucks bricks at first, and then it's not so bad after awhile.

You are now in survival mode: helping yourself and your family to live through this with the least possible discomfort. Not a thing wrong with that. Helping friends, and neihbors through this is a true sign of good charactor, that which compares to our soldiers at war. Selfless acts of good will and care for your brothers and sisters. You are worthy of a good, long hug and thanks from all whom you serve.

    I'm rootin' fer ya!

HANG IN THERE...IT'LL BE OVER SOON!!! And then you and all around you will be the wiser...
