What is a good grate level thermometer to use? Correct me if I am wrong but I assume the $5 replacement grill thermometers at Home Depot isn't the most accurate.
If you buy a regular dial gauge and then calibrate it against boiling water (adjusted for altitude, about 1 deg per 500 feet I think), then for smoking purposes, you should be pretty good. I've found them to be better than the Taylor digital products.
That's whati did. I bought a 3/8"x16 bolt that was 3/4' long, two washers and a nut, all Stainless Steel, and drilled it out the size of the thermo. I have it 1/2" below grill level. Works like a charm!!
