Hey there fellow smokers. I  wanted to share my  finished work on  my Trailmaster. I live in the NW so it stays cold most of the year.  I figured I could  put a jacket on  this baby and help hold heat better. Prob wont need it in the summer. So I  bought some automotive  double sided  heat shield and  put this together and am going to try it out tomorrow . I did  the bottom half and used wire to hold it and  the top half  slides righ on.  When  the door is lifted the  jacket  moves with it and closes  with no problems.

I am going  to  break  it in ( already  seasoned it) by doing a  65lb pig! Thats right,  going  whole hog for my  first  time. Never done one before but  what the heck. I  modified  a few things inside to make room for  it. I dropped the  inside grates and turned em. Set some  bricks to  sit  a few inches over  tuning plates I made.  I  did the smoke stack mod and the  charcoal holder mod. Also added a  hole for  therm and a larger hole for grease drain with a drain line to a  can.  I   wanna thank those that have  taken time to post good info on how to  do these things. I will  post pics of the pig later, good or bad. hehe.

Well, it seems to work really well.  The smoker holds a steady tempeture  for a lot longer than before with less wood/ lump charcoal. I did a brisket and 2 slabs in 9 hrs at  250 with under a  20# bag and some pecan and hickory chunks. It was about 38 degrees that night.

I smoked a 65lb pig and it  came out OK. I give it a 6 outa 10. It did not have the smokeyness I was looking for and the skin was not crispy.   I think a half hog might work better in  this smoker size. It was fun  to do and everyone enjoyed it.  I need to fix the hot spot in the front of the box so I dont have to move the meat around much.

Jim, morning.....  Have you seen how some folks will put an extra chunk of steel, for a heat deflector, near the firebox ??

That concept works very well....

That would definitely be worth a try....  You will still get heat above the plate and help move it to other areas of the smoker....

I think that would solve most of the heat issues, if not all of them....

Thanks Dave!  I was initially concerned with having a "hot spot" and thought it would be a good idea. Being that it is so thick I figure it will help with overall heat distribution.  Plus, It gives me a great place to have my water pan.
