This gives you some background. I made the lid mod and cut a piece of metal to cover it. Not purty, but functional. Also cut back on the amount of charcoal to just over 1/4 pan of Kingsford.
Temps topped out at 305º or so, then settled below in the 275 to 290 range. Lowest I saw before ribs were done was 250º (2 1/2 to 3 hours cooking time, when finished) and I maintained that with a handful of additional coals to finish meal.
Again, used sand in pan instead of water. Looks like I am on the right track at any rate.
