I guess nobody wants to take this one on.

I don't like lid therms.  They don't tell me what is going on at the grate where my meat is sitting.

I like wired therms elevated at meat level on the grate to tell me what is happening to my food.

Something like this.

No need for expensive, but the lid therm won't usually tell you what is actually happening at the  meat level on the grate.

Good luck and good smoking.

I agree that digital is the way to go.  I have 2 already and use them for meat.  I'll probably pick up another 2 or 3 to use in the chambers.  I have 1 horizontal and one verticle so having 2 in the main chamber and 1 in the vertical would mean a lot of wires running around.

i use a lid thermo for basic temperature monitoring of cook chamber temp....i go by what my term says i have stuck in the meat....i used a termo at grate level and found that at grate level to my lid mounted was only 6/7 degree difference from each other, my lid mount is bout 5" from grate level bout the middle of my smoker door........bob

....

A thermometer that cost $4.99 won't be adjustable, but it's cheap and can be checked in boiling water. Mounted at the top you will get a false reading of the cooking temp.  Move them (get 2 at that price) and put one at each end of you Smoker @ grate level (re-check accuracy each time - or - get a Digital Probe (Maveric 732) or even a Polder at Bed Bath and Beyond or Target - cheaper and more accurite.

Here I have therms. all over my Rig plus 2 Mavs.

Therms. are a must for safe cooking , taking the guesswork out of the equation.

Have fun and...
