Ok guys and gals. I had this crazy idea.

It is early November and we have a little less than two months before the end of the year.

What would you think about creating the First Annual SMF Calendar? There would be room for 12 monthly photos, maybe even sandwich in an extra photo page between each month, to give coverage to say, 24 individuals. There are so many good cooks and so many innovative smokers represented here, we would want to cover as many as possible.

We could ask for a couple volunteers who have the time and the interest to coordinate everything, so there were not “too many cooks in the kitchenâ€, so to speak.

We could all submit smoking related photos. Say, of our rigs, of us with our rigs, Q-Views, functions we attended or performed at etc.

We could select a photo holding web site, like “Photobucket†or any of the many such places, where we could collect, display and eventually vote on entries. These services usually have a simple way to create merchandise so should be easy to create the actual Calendar, after the winning entries had been identified.

We would need to have a way to take a vote and tally the winners. But that would be pretty easy.

Would also need to compute costs and charge for the actual Calendars. If Jeff was willing, we might be able to sell and distribute through his current web mechanism. We could mark the actual cost up a buck or two and let the proceeds go to support of the SMF site.

I think it sounds like fun.

This is a very loosely thought out idea. I havenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t spent any real time working out the details, just the concept. I will leave the details to all of you.

I am sure there will be plenty of “Pros†and plenty of “Consâ€, so everyone take a turn at voicing your ideas and opinions, and letâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s see if there is any interest.

I think it's a great idea! Especially to donate the proceeds to SMF.

Some of my thoughts:
  • Include "tips and tricks" on each month along with pictures
  • Mark the dates for major BBQ competitions, KCBS or otherwise
  • Make certain months dedicated to certain foods... i.e., July could be ribs month, August could be brisket month, etc.
Sounds like a start to a great idea! Kudos!

great idea........both of cha........maybe even make enuff for us that compete, to maybe sell at comps........gift ideas even..........give it as a gift, and maybe turn THAT person into a smokeaholic.......just a thought.......good idea skip

Hmmm... maybe a discount on supplies/recipes purchased for newbies... would not be hard to serialize the copies for verification. And of COURSE we'd need a centerfold! best BBQ Bosom... male Or female, of course...after a great rib feast LOL

All I need to know is... where's the order form!

I love the idea... I have seen it done in other organizations with much success.

One of the big stumbling blocks however, is photo quality. Not everyone has a decent camera at their fingertips... that being said, pix have to be of a certain resolution and size to be printable. Pictures may look good on a website, but when they are enlarged and hit the print, they can get pretty grainy.

Another stumbling block is we are really cutting it short on time to get it all together for next year; for example: submitting photos, judging photos, choosing verbage for the pages, getting someone to put this all together and find a good printer... plus the holidays are upon us.

Then there's up front money... we'll need to pay for the calendars up front, so that money has to come from somewhere...

I don't mean to be a wet blanket here; this is a great idea. But if we start thinking now for 2009, we'd have a quality calendar for sure. It really takes time to get it all together and sort things out. I'd hate to rush the whole thing and produce something that would have been lots better if we had more time.

Just my 2 cents...

I don't think you're being a wet blanket at all, you're being realistic! You make some very good points here, and the great thing is that ideas are brewing and people are excited about them. You make a great point that there's probably not enough time this late in the year, but we can definitely start working on something for next year. I also like the idea of shirts and hats, etc. Perhaps a 6-month calendar for the end of 2008?

Hey Pescadero, Excellent idea, it looks like alot of takers in SMF. Newbies and Pros all would have a chance to show off.

Some great input.

If we think it is too short notice for a 2008 Calendar, we could go forth with the submission of photos, collecting them in some place, establishing a poll or voting method etc. Work on getting the infrastructure in place and just use it as a friendly little game or photo contest, to test out our mechanics. We could, as some have said, possibly work some simple merchandise in to it, even on this short notice.

We are getting just what I had hoped for, some good exchange of ideas. Thanks to all of you for your input. I hope that even more jump once they get a chance.

Huh??? What does that have to do with a Calendar? Maybe you didn't read the start of the thread. The idea was never to compete with SMF Logo or merchandise. It was to build a Calendar for 2008. That's the name of the thread, even.

Now, I just happens that we may be short of time, so are thinking of other things we could do in the shorter time frame, such as get prepared for next year and maybe do something simple in between.

If you read through the thread you will see that the idea is to get members to submit their personal photos and have some fun.

And we're still waiting ... it would be easy enough to do and print on the computer.

I'm thinking we have time to do a computer generated calender with group input. We put it together get Jeffs approval give it to him ... Maybe he can work his magic and attach it to the tip jar or somehow have the tip jar send a link where we could download the "Official SMF calender", for making a Contribution to the tip Jar.
