I decided to go with a 1.66 vertical uds. The design was ripped off by another poster on SMF. It has a few smokes under its belt, but it is yet to produce something that wows me and/or the wife.
I am not sure if the quality of meat I used was up to par. The chicken was the best thing that came...
I wonder if I funnelled the two drums to make an hour glass type shape if the temperatures would be more even. I don't know. Any ideas? On another note, I guess this thread is no longer a reverse flow offset build, I don't know if it should be moved or what, do what you will administrators, I...
So, I got my barrels, did a burn and for the last4 hours have been trying to get the double uds up to temperature. I've done zero welding at this point. I want to see if it can be done first. I simply used the lid ring to attach two drums top to top. Drilled identical 3/4" 3x on the bottom of...
Right on Dave, you're the man. So, with using a drum lid is there always a problem with condensation? Should one invest immediately on a weber kettle dome? Or is the dome more about creating space inside the cooker? Or both? Btw how is the food out of a drum smoker if done correctly?
I really have no idea, I've never done this before. I guess I was thinking of going with three 1" ball valves plus maybe a 3" pipe and damper for air inlets. From there I'd go with a 14"x 24"h fuel basket. Heat it with lump charcoal, although if wood is possible I'd go strictly wood, or mix...
Well Dave, your reputation precedes you in the build department and the fact that you aren't against it makes me think that it is feasible, at the very least.
So that makes me excited about the build.
Hi y'all, has anyone here ever constructed a vertical double uds before, and if so how was it for heat control and fuel consumption? If not maybe some of you have enough knowledge about thermodynamics that you could tell me why my idea is good or bad. Thanks everyone for having read this.
The reason is because I want to do it without insulating it and I have a spot in my yard that is enclosed and fireproof but not large enough for a double barrel smoker like you showed me, and I want something bigger than a single uds.
Wolfman, I was actually looking for two barrels standing one on top of the other , vertically. About 5.5' tall. Like a UDS just twice as high. But thanks anyways. Always appreciate any help I get.
For sure, Gary. I've never built one before, so I think no matter how much I research and plan it, I would surely encounter a million little problems I'd never expected. Lol.
Anyway, I'm moving on to an UDS for now. I got the itch for smoking and nothing can satisfy it, except for smoking...
Thanks Dave omak. That would be awesome advise if my world didn't come crashing down today. My pipe I found was stuck in the ice, and they broke chains trying to pull it out with the tractor. It will be there until spring. The reverse flow will be on hiatus for now.
Thanks everyone and sorry to...
Thanks timberjet. I'll look into it. But I gotta tell you I had my heart set on a RF. Do you have experience with both types of smoker? And if so do you have a preference?
I like the idea of the thermal blanket, but would like something more permanent and maybe aesthetically appealing. But if I did take a thermal blanket would I need to keep rain and snow off of it?
