Keeping temp down in a mini WSM

Had the same issue initially but now just keep the bottom cents a hair open plus now I only light 6 coals to start. Just finished some abts that came out great.

Post A Picture of Your COMPLETED Mini-WSM Here ! (Mini Weber Smokey Mountain, MWSM)

Thanks for all the help on this forum!  I finally completed my mini.  So far I have smoked two pork butts, a chuck roast, and a fatty.  Before this, I have been exclusively smoking on my 22.5 Weber kettle.  I can say that I love this mini.  It really can hold the temp for a really long time and...

    Starting this weekend!

Do you have any gap between the bottom of the pot and the lid? Or did your pot nest inside the top of the lid? Thanks this place is a great help! It's been a fun little project so far plus I was able to try out some new tools too :)

    Starting this weekend!

Oh boy I need some practice! I tried the minion style by filling the basket with charcoal and clearing a "bowl" for lit coal. I added about 8-10 lit ones. My extra grates didn't arrived yet so I just used the steamer insert as a diffuser temporarily. Funny side note the grates actually did...

    Starting this weekend!

Yep that's the one! Looks like though I may just change plans a bit and go with single level cooking using the steamer ridge to hold the diffuser rather than a second grate. A couple issues came up to change my mind :). First the imusa pot I got won't fit inside the top of the lid flush...

    Starting this weekend!

I got a bunch of supplies and tools this past week (smokey joe gold, stainless hardware, riveter, expanded metal, terra cotta, yada yada). I already had the imusa pot. Although I'm missing extra grates:(. Went to both lowes and Home Depot but no luck:( so ordered on Amazon. I saw one of the...

    Charcoal basket logic?

    Charcoal basket logic?

I'm looking forward to it! I think I may need to learn about some thermodynamics or something :). How do you usually set up your coals and light them? I've seen a couple different methods like a donut of coal then add lit ones to the middle. Or fill it up and add lit ones on top etc...

    Charcoal basket logic?

So thanks to all the great information around I've decided to build me a min wsm. I'm way early in the process after reading a bunch. The only piece I have so far is an imusa pot (not even an sj yet:)). Anyways I keep reading that it's almost more than optional- more like highly recommended to...

    Hello from CA

Hello I got tuned in to smoking/bbq somehow 6or so months ago. I did a bunch of reading and research and eventually decided a weber kettle was going to be my goto grill! I looked for a while for a deal (end of season maybe?) on a weber gold but no luck. Finally I find an open box model at lowes...
