Is there any set back to using kiln dried, untreated lumber for smoking? A friend of mine gave me a box of hickory lumber scraps to use. He said to soak them before using so they don't burn too quickly.
Any feedback?
I've been using fruit wood from a local orchard. I purchased the wood in the spring and was told it was cut last season. I have both apple and pear. They said it was good for smoking. I've noticed a pungent smell to the smoke for both types, but have mainly used just the apple. It seems to me to...
My neighbor trimmed their silver maple tree and I got to take the wood for helping out. I thought I would use some 20 gal containers to season it in - easy storage and access. I checked the wood this morning and there was condensation in the container. Using Rubbermaid Brute cans. Wood was fresh...
Any record on a good grill pad for a smoker? Lowes has the original grill pad -

But, it looks like I would need two of these for a smoker.
Any experience with...
Bass Pro retails them for around $930. I then had a reduction due to some scrapes to the paint on the side (this one was in best condition) and a discount because I am a Boy Scout leader and my son is a scout.
They get knocked around in shipping on the truck. I told The manufacturer about it.
I put the smoker out today. First time outside. I had to finish the patio and I had also waited threeonths for an order from Horizon of the baffle, charcoal box and cover. Very nice grill. Haven't seasoned it or used it yet. Looking forward to it.
I looked at the 16 inch Horizon today. Not sure I noticed a convection plate though, but there was a slight baffle built in. I also noticed that I would be able to pop out the main grates in the barrel and put in the plate from the fire box - and that made room for a beer can chicken or bird...
Old school
We are doing that today so we can see the difference for ourselves. I was eyeing those up. Can't say I have the budget per se - but if something is a better value we can make it work. Just need one good commission check!

Consider me a newbie at this.
I'm ignorant of the terminology you used. Sorry. I bought a cheap smoker for $90 5 years ago and didn't know what I was doing. Now it is rusted out and I need to replace it - want to replace it with something better.
While I tried smoking with it, I didn't...
As I posted in my intro - I have been using a Brinkmann Smoke n Pit for about 5 years. The elements got the best of it and a leg rusted off. Time for a new one...
I'm torn on some decisions with a new smoker after reading reviews and seeing some recommended modifications on barrel smokers. I...
I'm Michael from Hummelstown, Pa - Right next to Hershey. I had a cheap Brinkmann barrel smoker for about 5 years. I believe it was the "smoke n pit". I moved it yesterday to clean it for the season and one of the legs broke off. So, I'm on the market for a new smoker. I have my sights on the...
