UDS: How I Built Mine: Horizontal w/Pic

What are you dimensions for your firebox? As well as the measurements for the firebox-to-cooking chamber opening? I am thinking about building a horizontal drum smoker as well, I was blessed to be given some free barrels

Weber (or dome) lid exhaust mods

My lid is from Char-boil, I kept the damper or whatever you want to call it and trimmed it down tacked on a 4" rain cap, cut the bottom of rain cap so that it would be level when my lid was closed.  Cut out a slot in the back for the damper to still serve its purpose of closing closed...

    Extension on the ball valve???

With just running your ball valve, do you or can you still maintain that same temp?  Or is it just that your UDS works that way?

    Extension on the ball valve???

I have 3 one inch holes around my barrel, two inches off the bottom. On two of the holes I have them capped/plugged and on the third I have a ball valve with a 24" extension on it for easier accessibility. My question to the UDS family is I am having trouble maintaining my heat on a regular...

    New Guy with a UDS

Its the expanded metal that is sold at Home Depot, so it possibly could be.  The cooks that I have done on it have turned out fine, no metal taste or smell to any of the meat.  I have noticed that on some smokes there is more moisture inside the drum than on others, is this common?  And what I...

    New Guy with a UDS

Nothing like a good snowy, Super Bowl Sunday cook, held 250 the entire cook and very pleased with that Some baby backs before the big game.  Used the 2-2-1 method with a standard rub.  Foilded them and applied a light layer of BBQ sauce along with some apple butter.  Finished them with a...

    New Guy with a UDS

After raining all day yesterday, its finally ready to go Started off with 10 brickettes in the chimney and then weighed out about 10lbs and put in the basket.  This is just my seasoning run, so I wanted to see how my drum would run as far as temperatures, really don't care how much fuel is...
