    Custom reverse flow exhaust vent?

    Custom reverse flow exhaust vent?

Can two exhaust pipes be used? How would one calculate the diameter and length needed for two exhausts? How would one calculate the size of each plenum? One 8" would have been 23" according to the Feldon Calculator for my application -anything less in diameter would be too tall. Thanks

    Custom reverse flow exhaust vent?

Yes I checked the two scrap yards around me here in CIncy but the only 8" pipe they had was real thick walled, just keep looking. Hate to pay for new tubing

    Custom reverse flow exhaust vent?

Thanks... I thought it would not work. any ideas on different materials for a 8" duct? not a fan of the big box store duct work they have since they are flimsy. I know I can buy thin wall tubing but trying to find a cheaper way

    Custom reverse flow exhaust vent?

Would a rectangular duct with the same volume and cross section as a round duct - flow air the same? I was contemplating using a 24" x 2.5" x 20" rectangle duct in placement of a 8" x 24" duct thanks Jeff

how will I know if i need a heat shield

I am in the final steps of finishing up my 275 oil tank RF smoker. After reading that some builders put heat shields under ther RF plate into the firebox,  I am wondering if I should add one to mine. Would you add one now or wait? How will I know if there is one needed? thanks Jeff

    Venting a reverse flow smoker

Thanks for the replies to all. What problems do you see with the Feldon calculations on the reverse flow? I respect everyones opinion and since this is my first reverse flow build would like to consider all options. I used a 275 gal fuel oil tank for the reverse flow cooking chamber and have...

    Venting a reverse flow smoker

I understand the concepts of restrictions. Do you not want to keep the smoke and heat in the cooking chamber for a certain period of time and still maintain the 'draw' of the heat and smoke from the fire box? That is the purpose of the original question. I am adhearing by Fledons Calculator on...

    Venting a reverse flow smoker

Hello - I am ready to install the vent portion of the cook chamber and have a couple of questions. I was thinking of using a 90 degree duct that they use in home construction that goes from a 8" round to a 4 x 12 rectangular opening - like for a floor register. Any opinions using this vs using...

propane burner in a reverse flow

I was also thnking of a jet burner under the RF plate but still have yet to figure out how to supply enough air flow without disrupting the smoke flow to the cook chamber. They seem to be an easy build.

propane burner in a reverse flow

Yes RB it is becoming a debate for me also. To be an effective grill I agree the burner needs to be above the RF plate or it just becomes an oven. What my concern is the distance from the RF plate to the first cooking shelf to maximize the smoking process- which smoking meat is the main reason I...

propane burner in a reverse flow

How is your pipe burner set up?  drilled hole size, spacing, and orifice?

propane burner in a reverse flow

great picture- so it still would be better to have the burner below the rf plate for gilling than having  the burner removable and located above? I guess because of better heat distribution? If the burner is placed 3.5" below the plate will my 3/16 rf plate be heavy enough to take the heat...

propane burner in a reverse flow

I was planning a single 1.25" X 60" home made pipe burner slit cut spascing at 1.5" and with a #55 orifice. When you placed yours  under the RF plate how did it perform as a grill? What spacing do you use between the RF plate and the first cooking surface? I appreciate all advice I can get - thanks

propane burner in a reverse flow

Hello Ribwizard - been reading this post for help on my 275 gallon oil tank RF smoker build. I would like your opinion - and others - on what the spacing between the RF plate and the first cooking surface should be with the idea of using removable propane pipe burners.

WANTED: information on adding supplemental heat to a smoker

This is the tank I have and looks of what I am planning on building. The doors and chimney location is the same but the firebox will be larger and meet the Feldon Calculator. The area I am talking about is above the top door and welding a ceiling to keep heat and smoke down where the meat is.

WANTED: information on adding supplemental heat to a smoker

The tank is the standard 275 gallon oil tank used for heating oil for homes. I am going to have to take pics as I work on it. The tank is approx 27" deep 60" long and can't recall the height.. I have two horizontal doors (one opens up and the other down)that combine for a total door opening of...

WANTED: information on adding supplemental heat to a smoker

sorry no pics yet. The thinking is to weld a solid piece of sheet metal to close off  the top inside of  the 275 gallon tank above the door to block off the unused space from heat and smoke and hopefully concentrating it more in the cook chamber where the meat is located. kind of like the plate...
