    Do mods help? Really?

Some of the mods help, others not so much. I have a drip pan that distributes the heat well, and the chimney mod forces the smoke to circulate. Those, plus adding better thermometers, are useful mods. As for the concept of having perfect heat distribution.... I often find it useful to have a...

Char-Griller Smokin Pro with firebox- Mods

I seasoned mine, got many smokes before I needed to do anything. I now scrape it down every 5-6 uses, and then use high heat black spray paint to touch it up. Working well, no rust.

Char-Griller Smokin Pro with firebox- Mods

Actually, having done many of the mods I also got rid of most of them. The baffle, for example. While it does serve to even out temps a bit it also sends waaaay too much of the heat out the top of the firebox instead of into the cooking chamber. Getting rid of that baffle reduced my fuel usage...

Char-Griller Smokin Pro with firebox- Mods

My fuel usage is: one mound of ROyalOak hardwood charcoal, followed by as many logs as it takes. The last full load of ribs took about five hours total burn, and that was three logs (two cherry, one maple) after the initial coals.

Made a Long Burning Charcoal Basket for my Firebox

I've given up on the charcoal basket. It works, but I find myself just tossing various logs into the fire once it's going so the basket gets in the way. If I were doing all charcoal I'd still do the basket, but since I went to logs my smokes are even better.

    Brinkmann Trailmaster Limited

Available at BJs, HomeDepot, and presumably elsewhere. Heavy steel with steel wheels . Virtually identical to the Oklahoma JoeLonghorn, for $289 at BJs. If i didn't already have the CharGriller, I'd run out and get one. And in fact I did get one.... for my brother in law for Fathers Day. :)...

    Gonna modify a Krups BeerTender

Of course I will share. Problem is i forget the specs! I have to retrieve the little bags that specify the sizes, so look for me to modify this post over the next couple days. The 1/2" NPT sizes detailed below might not be accurate. The tube dispensing the beer is 1/4"OD food grade plastic...

    Gonna modify a Krups BeerTender

So there is a quick connect on the back of the unit now. And the regulator clicks into that, feeding CO2 into the keg. A food grade tube goes thru the top T connector, and feeds beer into the smaller tube that was part of the plastic dispenser gizmo. Very little modification really in return for...

    Gonna modify a Krups BeerTender

Did it. Got the pics, will upload in a day or two. Basic outline: drilled a hole to pass the CO2 thru, and took the beer output and plugged it into one of the 'throwaway' plastic gizmos you need to buy to utilize the BeerTender with Heineken kegs. Couldn't be more simple really. Merry Xmas!

    Gonna modify a Krups BeerTender

First lesson learned: there are a variety of pneumatic fittings. I have them on my portable co2 rig. Figured I'd just get more, so I could use that regulator on the BeerTender. Got the wrong one. Installed it completely before I found out. Oh well.... It'll be a few days before I get to the...

    Gonna modify a Krups BeerTender

I've been minikegging my home brew for a few years. Last year, someone gave me a Krups BeerTender mini-kegerator. Nice unit! Problem is that it is completely dependent on purchasing minikegs that have built in CO2 dispensers. And the problem(s) with those are - they are not reusable - they are...

    bottle conditioning

Never had a bottle break on me. But cleaning 50 bottles, filling them, capping etc can be a PITA. so I mostly minikeg. But in both cases, I let the beer condition itself. The aging process improves it.

    More Brewskies and Vino

If you take all the liquid right down to the bottom, it shouldn't. Ale yeasts are top-fermenters, so all the active yeast ought find its way to secondary. I've tried both, and find little to no difference. And since racking to secondary after one week allows me to brew again quickly, production...

Char-Griller Smokin Pro with firebox- Mods

Look at the tuning plate configuration there. Heat travels UP. That thing tries to push it DOWN. So much of your heat will escape via the top of the firebox... bet you're doubling your fuel consumption for each smoke. My "tuning plate" is just a full size (26"x18") commercial baking pan. I have...

Do they still make New Braunfels griller/smokers?

Think on that for a second. We are not talking about a mass of steel here. We are talking an extra 1/8" of steel plate. If you had a 4"x4"x8" ingot, indeed the center would retain heat for awhile. But imagine a 46 degree day, with clouds and a steady breeze. Tree is simply no way an...

Do they still make New Braunfels griller/smokers?

The insulating capability differences of 1/8" vs 1/4" steel are almost negligible. The thicker steel might retain heat for another minute longer, but conversely it requires extra time to bring up to temperature. A heavier firebox is good to prevent burn-through and warping, but the food chamber...

Home-Made Fan Assisted Stoker for my Side Fire Box

I would not set up a fan to blow into the firebox, but rather to draw out from the chimney. Yes it will get a bit greasy and need replacement. But it will also ensure that heat is not being wasted... and will keep ash from being blown onto your food. Additionally, it will mostly prevent...

Brinkmann Trailmaster. JUNK? RANT! Not happy!

I returned my first CGSP side firebox to Lowes because the door would not properly. All the heat was escaping. They took the return with no problem.

Char-Griller Smokin Pro with firebox- Mods

Gotta say, I wish the CGSP had a Weber type coating. The finish on the metal dictates that it not be left out in the weather, but the wheels don't hold up. Of course you can't expect everything for $169.

    Horizonal Offset Smoker Mods

As a baffle I use a large baking sheet set on bricks. Works well. I keep a small bit of a gap at the firebox end, with a much larger gap at the other end. A bit of temp difference from end to end can actually work for you in many instances, while a hard baffle will actually prevent much of the...
