If the one pictured (gen 1 unit) is indeed what is now selling at Sam's Club, that's great news. That is the tried and true design that has worked so well for many people here for years.
So MB replaced all of your smoker, except the door, no charge, and now you want them to sell you a door for the old one they replaced, so you will now have TWO smokers. How long will they continue to give good service if customers are taking advantage of their liberal customer service policy...
I'm pretty sure that is the old generation unit, not the new one with all the problems. I have one that I bought at Sam's Club last year for $299. It works perfect, and I love it. Temps are always within a couple degrees from my readings on the Maverick therm. I've added a AMNPS, and now its...
I was a bit disappointed when I first bought my MES 40 at Sam's only to see it replaced by a new model only a couple weeks later. Now, that I see all the problems people are having with the newest generation, I'm thrilled that I was able to get one of the last of the old generation smokers...
It's ridiculous to say everything made in China is junk. That's where your iPhone, your computer and flat screen TV were all made. Quality is less a function of the country of origin than the quality control standards of the company. I haven't heard many horror stories about the quality of...
Wipe it off with damp cloth before it cools down. I use a cloth wet with some Dawn dish soap in hot water then dry with another cloth and everything comes right off. I have some silicone oven mitts that allow me to use very hot water, but even warm water should work, (if you don't let the unit...
Here is a cover which fits the MES 40 perfect. It's well made, attractive, and very affordable.

If you want a full-size chip loader vs the half you now have, it's very easy to just grind through the little spot welds and remove the piece that blocks the other half of the loader. But once you add an AMNPS, I doubt you would ever use it again.
There are several Sam's Club locations in CA. The closest to San Jose is in Concord about 45 miles.

If you have a Sam's warehouse nearby the MES 40 is a great unit for $299. If they don't have it in stock you can usually order online for store pickup. That way ou could open the box and check for damage before even taking it home.
If you have a Sam's Club nearby, you can buy the Masterbuilt Electric 40 for $299. Great unit, well insulated with digital remote control. Can you tell that I love mine?
Add an AMNPS and it's damn near perfect.
Since I keep my MES 40 on one of the chrome carts from Sam's, I just removed that back handle and the cover is much easier to get on and off. But even with the handle it stil fits well, just a little tighter going on.

Has anyone here tried putting charcoal in the chip tray when using AMNPS with wood pellets as a smoke source? It seems like one way to try for a bit of smoke ring and that charcoal flavor.
I didn't cut the shelf. I just set the three shelves at 6", 13" and 21" with the deeper of the three in the middle position. My wood chips store on the center shelf and I store extra smoker shelves and pans on the lower one. That arrangement puts the top of the smoker at five feet from the...
