I had a lot of family that were roughnecks. They worked in the fields before that. Most of them came from Mckey, Vian and Tahlequah Oklahoma. Both sides ended in up in Bakersfield lol. We had a saying in Bakersfield. Oklahoma took over Bakersfield and never fired a shot lol.
Makes sense. The shaker piece came from good ol Bakersfield CA. Along with some core samples and a massive drill bit. Took 3 guys to load that bit. The piece from the shaker was in a rock and cement bbq setup. The metal on the shaker is pretty thick. I can see why now. Thanks for the info!
Yeah this damn handle is supposed to be 1/2" inner diameter but it's a hair over 3/8". Handle rod is right at 1/2". Only option I had for a handle. This was an event. My hands are dead. I'm done.
My uncle also gave me this. He said it came from a hopper or shaker or something like that they used for mud. Then someone made an adjustable bbq grill out of it. I was going to cut it up for a firebox grate but probably best to keep it together. Maybe that will be a different thread 😂😂😂
Those chamber grates were a tough clean. I gave up after a while. Got that coal grate from my uncle. He got it from the oil fields. No clue what it went to but it's thick steel.
Well I had a chance to clean out the Train aka Old Glory today. Underneath that foil was about an hours worth of scraping and pressure washing sludge and rust out. Lawd what a mess. The firebox had a lot of rust. This thing was definitely never covered. Going to be fun ordering a legit cover. Oh...
I use 1/2" expanded metal on my regular bbq grill tops because veggies fall through the regular grates. I'll post a pic of my propane grill with that size of expanded metal on it. I use the same for my charcoal grill top. I just bought an old brinkmann offset that has regular grill grate tops in...
A little update. I was messing around and measuring the handles on my Brinkmann Cimmaron today and realized they are the same size handles that are on this large smoker I have with the wood handles. I matched them up with parts on amazon. A bit pricey. I would need 3 spring handles, 3 rods and 6...

Also want to add something to the inside bottom of the firebox. I took a lot of rust chunks out of there. I don't like those coals ending up on it. Eventually that is going to eat through. Maybe a steel plate or firebrick. Add a fire basket too.
Well I seasoned it. Soaked it inside and out with vegetable oil. Used some very old original kingsford and b&b lump mesquite to get it heated. It has a great draw through it. Smoked a bit in the beginning. Lump charcoal popped a lot and produced some ash that came out of the stack. I guess that...
I've got a portable sandblaster and media. I could take it apart and blast it out in the south 40 lol. I just don't know if that will even be worth the work. I already bought oil to season it. I would think even with it seasoned wouldn't the lids continue to rust under the oil? Mainly the FB lid.
Got the pressure washer out today. The firebox has a lot of pitting. A lot of rust chunks were flying. No holes. Luckily it's as thick as it is. I could have scraped it more. Here are a few pics. I have accepted the fact that when I use this thing I'll be sitting in a chair.
