I had a "Smokin-It" electric smoker. The thing was about as awesome as an electric smoker is going to get on the residential side. You have to weigh your wood chunks because it would easily over-smoke a piece of meat. Only downside I had was it didn't make crisp chicken skin. You also didn't...
That's the first time I have heard of the control being a PID. For the price, it needs to be a PID and be pretty accurate. I hope they delay release until they have their algorithm correct. It has to land as advertise.
I took the Weber no-chimney approach as a borrowed idea from Traegers Timberline grills. I think they say is helps even the heat and makes the smoke roll around the cooking chamber just a little bit longer. Traeger has also migrated that idea to their Ironwood line. I'm not sure it counts as...
Weber just doesn't have any mileage in the pellet sector yet. I would assume the Weber is going to be a solid performer, but if I had to bet $1500 on it today, I'm just not ready to pass on the Rec Tec.
Looking good so far! Put some mileage in on it and let us know what you think.
What's not good about the app?
How is heat distribution around the cooking area?
Is the controller temp fairly accurate to cooking chamber?
What about temp swings?
A couple YT videos have been popping up on them. Very cool for sure. I would really prefer a larger cooking surface. Definitely has "next thing" potential.
Everyone reviewing it right now seems to be guys that regularly pimp Weber equipment. Hopefully we'll start to see some real world reviews in the next couple months. Some neat ideas in the Weber for sure. When I upsize from my Traeger 22, the larger Weber would look good in my collection. For...
With simplistic controllers, 40+/- temp swings happen regularly with pellet grills. My stock Traeger would sometimes be worse. The Savannah upgrade fixed that.
Controlling a smooth smolder with a fan control, I would think reasonable temp control would be possible. Hopefully the fan speed is...
I would like one with a little bit more size too. I also would be more interested in something PID controlled. If it's gonna have a fan and temp control, I want it to drive nails in accuracy. I hope this proves the concept and really takes off.
I wish Weber had done this instead of jumping into...
Hopefully once this kink is worked out she be set up for the long haul. Everyone likes dogging Traeger, but I still think they put out a solid product.
I have the Savannah on my Traeger Pro 22. By nature I am the type to not leave good enough alone, so my setup time took a little while. Now that I'm comfortable with my setup, the grill runs very well. Half of my issue was me just being me. The FB group is awesome for information.
The controller...
I would assume the grill is fine, it just takes 20-30 minutes to stabilize in it temps.
When you call on more heat, the controller may be going 100% duty cycle to make up the difference. When the grill probe finally reaches temp, there likely was way too many pellets called on, and it simply...
I ran a few bags of LJ char-hickory pellets. More me personally, they left a little something weird in the taste. Hard to explain, smoke had a spiced note in smell which obviously left something in the food I didn't care for.
I didn't notice any noticeable difference consumption.
Your mileage...
I agree with you. I'm interested how they plan to manage such a small fire, and overall what will the smoke performance be like.
Costs have kept me from getting into a kamado of some sort. I still enjoy using my weber kettle.
I can't wait to see some reviews on this bastard child kamado too. I am sure it will stir up some passionate debate. May have to sell the traeger to make room for one of these fellas.
Clickin around on YouTube today and stumbled across this Kamado Joe that's pellet fired. I wonder how consistent they can hold that super low combustion due to the overall efficiency of the kamado design. I didn't see any other information on this thing. Anyone else hear of this yet?
I say go with the Rec Tec. PID control, wifi, ridiculous warranty, and horns for handles if you get into that.
The price is very attractive too when you factor in what you get.
I have a $1000 in my Traeger after adding the Savannah controller.
No way to lose unless you just don't end up using it.
