I use a butane torch similar to the one below to crisp the bacon after they are smoked. I will crisp the bacon as soon as the flame hits it. As others have said, scrape the inside with a spoon. If you scrape it well there will be almost no heat.

How about a combo? Master Built with a Bradley smoke generator. If I am going to be around home I feed it wood chips myself. If I need to leave or want to smoke overnight I use the Bradley smoke generator. Also perfect for cold smoking. The best of both worlds.
This is the one I use. It boast a range of 330 feet. From my eperience it comes mighty close to it if there is not a lot of obstacles between the transmiter and reciever.
