    advice needed

If you find a sale you can get a Green Mountain Grill(GMG) Daniel Boone for $450.  It is a pellet grill and I was very against this method however, with time constraints and a growing family I bit the bullet. I purchased this about a month ago and have not looked back.  I still use my homemade...

    insulated smokers

I insulated the entire smoker including the fire box. It keeps the outer shell of the smoker cool so you don't have to worry about kids or dogs burning themselves.

    insulated smokers

Hutch I used a 1/4 inch plate for the inside of my vault style smoker and our 2 inches of rock wool insulation around the entire unit. The thick plate provides thermal mass just like the porcelain of the green egg and the insulation provides the resistance to thermal conductance like the...

    Lets talk sand vs water!

I use bricks in my reverse flow horizontal smoker right above the rf plate. By adding bricks you add thermal mass. This results in the unit holding heat better during the smoke. What you get the thermal mass from really doesn't matter. Sand or brick will accomplish what you want. (I'm sure the...

How did you come up with your screen name?

Deer Meat this is an awesome thread.  I will definitely be back to read all the new posts. My name came from a fellow smoker and friend.  He likes things hot and is always adding cayenne pepper to anything.  I started to call him Cayenne kid, it fit because he likes it and he is kinda fiery red...

    Got a question for y'all

Looks great.  Thanks for the pics.  Warped doors can be a pain.  Once you heat that smoker up you will be surprised how it pops back into shape.

    Got a question for y'all

Sounds like a fun build.  Pics when you get into the project would be awesome.   In my experience a longer smoke stack is beneficial for a couple of reasons.   1st - longer stack will give you a better draft keeping the air flow such that you can maintain a thin blue smoke  by helping to pull...

    Rusty Cast iron

All the post inspired me to buy some 5 dollar cast iron pans and refinish them. Now they are all I use. My wife is coming around to using them as she sees how even they cook. Thanks again.
