You should check out this link to wikipedia for blackjack oak. It's very dense. That means it will actually burn "ashless" in the right conditions. You'll have a very good piece of wood that will burn very low and slow. It is very similar to post oak. The density of the wood make it burn that...
Here's a link to Harbor Freight for a manual slide log splitter. I bought one a few months back. I use it to cut over-beer sized splits into smaller ones. After I split them I cut them to length with my shop saw. It leaves me with a split and a chunk.
Here's the link...
What you might do is contact some tree trimming companies. The smaller the better. I have a couple that I call and get a lot of wood for basically their "beer" money. They have to pay to haul the stuff off to land fills. If you have a chain saw, anytime you hear a tree trimmer in your...
Two things come to mind. You need more air and you may have wood that has a high moisture content. If your splits are definetly dry, then try smaller splits. More surface area and more air will give you more heat.

Edit - Congrats on the Lang. You'll love it.
Original pad was 10' x 10'. I then added the framework and roof. Phase three was the decking around the original pad.
Phase 1 - Slab
Phase 2 - Tabrinacle
Phase 3 - Decking
Finished with 2x6 Flooring
I hope this gives you some ideas.

Put someone in charge of the camera and let's see what...

My brother owns Minerva's on Main Street in Webb City. It was a famous candy shop for many years. If you're in the area and want to stop by, tell them...
Portable generators may not be able to heat a house. My 20KW can heat and cool my house with every light on, the dryer running and the oven on broiler. :) The only gas I have is the propane to run the generator.
