For cold smoking I put a single burner hot plate in the bottom of my smoke hollow smoker. Then I put the smoke box directly on top of the element. Even on low/medium heat it generates a good amount of smoke with out heat.
I plan on doing it today. I will have to see how it is going to work...
Exciting! Mine are still growing. They got in to the ground kind of late, so I am hoping that I get something off of them. Not sure if they will even amount to much in a Wisconsin climate....kind of a short growing season.
Anyway, I plan on sampling a small piece to see how hot they are. ...
One of the other concerns is the condition. You tell from the picture that it has seen its share of weather.....due to the rust coloration. Although it does look like that is pretty much on the racks under the unit and on the fire box. I would hope that the inside is well seasoned and maintained.
The eggs did not have a visible smoke ring, it was difficult to shell, but it was tastey. Only a hint of smokeyness, so not really overpowering the flavor of the egg.
