Woohoo, my dad is picking up some heavy hinges and a latch today. It's going to be gnarly tonight. I was going to build some hinges but it's such a pain in the butt to find material in this town... no stores have plain old round bar and flat bar to choose from. Need to beg for scraps from...
I finally have the last piece of my firebox in hand, the vents are cut perfectly. Very pumped. I cut apart this metal rack I had laying around that was used to hold granite counter tops at one point. Should have more than enough material to build the support frame for the smoker. Going to do...
Sounds good guys, I wish I could fit the racks in my dishwasher. Now that I don't have to be concerned about keeping the actual shell of it too clean (aside from obvious nasties/outside tidy) I'm not so worried. I have a dedicated rubbermade tub for cleaning it. If I get hot enough water in it...
Some more experienced folks will chime in no doubt, but you still need a decent length to create good draw, so whatever diameter and length gets you the desired volume. I think it's somewhere around 30-40" long or thereabouts, but someone please correct me.
I should have my new, properly oriented, firebox piece with the vents cut out tomorrow afternoon. This weekend looks like I might make some more headway into this project.
I was planning on using the angle grinder with a 1/8" thick disc. What angle would you suggest?
And where abouts should I cut the door? Looking from the end of tank, at like the 9 and 12 o'clock positions?
How thick of a cut should I make for the CC door to allow for any expansion due to heat? Or will it not be hot enough there to matter? What about for the intakes on the FB? Do I need to have a little wiggle room there so the vent covers don't seize up due to heat expansion?
Or use the circle calculator he has in his sig line. There was a post I saw not long ago where he explained how to use it too. You can use it to figure out the proper area you need, and how high up you tank to cut and stuff.
I'm not sure about having your FB damper on the very bottom, but I'm a newb too. I'd expect to be dropping lots of ash out on the ground and maybe clogging up the vent. Unless I misunderstood your drawing.
Yup, I have the auto darkening. I was just starting to get the hang of things too. That's why I was so frustrated when I ran out of wire... haha
But this project was also going to be the learning grounds for welding and fabbing. My dad and I are working on a few cars and didn't want to learn on...
Dave, we have lots of Ag supply around here, and a welding supply as well. Not worried about getting the right welding supplies, just wasn't an option to get the right contact tips, wire, etc at 9:00PM on a Sunday. heh
I'll get resupplied this week for when I get my new piece cut. My dad wants...
If I had either of those stores locally I'd love to rib.
I know Dave. We didn't know the extra spool was smaller. I made do with the hideous welds, luckily they're on the inside where no one will see them. The outside welds were sufficient to hold it together. I'll get some more 0.035 before...
Welded up the fire box pieces that I could. Went rather well for my first time welding. (Until I ran out of the one gauge of wire and went to a slightly smaller one... then I couldn't get anything right lol)
Just have to get the side with the vents recut and figure out hinges and a latch for...
Got my half moon opening cut out. Went better than expected and did up to the tank real nice. Going to start welding the fire box after supper.
ETA: what are some rules of thumb for where to cut the CC door? Cut just below the bottom rack? How high up? What about deciding width?
