New to BBQ smoking, in Norman, OK

Well, I went out and did it. Still waiting on that pit thermometer, but now I've got two 19" pots (16" inner diameter) with a 15" grate and 12" grate. This also looks to make everything else fit in more nicely, and I've got more ports (drainage holes) for intake and exhaust control!

Dave, while I don't doubt someone skilled with power tools could do that, I'm definitely not one of those someones. ;) I'm trying to minimize my modifications to the pots themselves. Speaking of which, after looking around at some other smokers, I've been thinking that maybe a 12" and 9" grid...

New to BBQ smoking, in Norman, OK

Hey, thanks for the comments and welcomes everyone.  I guess I should've done a better job updating the design after I bought the parts, as my plans changed a little. 1) I decided against the removable lid for that exact reason you stated. Seemed too risky/complicated, and I wanted to minimize...

Thanks, and I was at that game, too. Met some awful Florida fans (some even stole our boxed dinners!), but also met some awesome Florida fans who shared their tailgate food with us to make up for it. Ah, the world of sports,   .

Suggestions for flower pot smoker designs I drew up.

I guess you can't see it in that original design, but three of those 2" steel nipples will serve as the exhaust, removing the caps as necessary. They're 1/2" diameters on the inside, so I think it should be okay. If not, I can open up the drain holes on the bowl and put in larger ones.

I tried the small Weber, the inside diameter is exactly 13", so if I went with a branded grid, it'd have to be the Big Green Egg replacement, which is $30 minimum! But, I found a few random stainless steel grids on Amazon for cheap ($10 for a 12", $6 for a 9"), so I've got two grids I'll stack...

New to BBQ smoking, in Norman, OK

Well, as the topic states, I'm brand new to this game (though I've been a long-time fan of smoked foods!) living in Norman, OK. I'm a grad student at the University of Oklahoma, studying cognitive psychology. Outside of that, I'm a trumpet player in the Oklahoma National Guard Band, and have...

Hey all, thanks for the comments and welcomes. I'll be sure to get to that roll call taken care of soon enough. For now, though, I went and started buying supplies for my build! So far I've got the pot and a bowl for a lid (both 15" ceramic from Home Depot), three ceramic pot feet, two 1/2"...

Suggestions for flower pot smoker designs I drew up.

Hi all. I'm new to the smoking game (in fact, I've never had a smoker, but been a long time fan of smoked meats), and after looking into buying one for a couple days, I decided it might be worth my time to start a project in designing and building my own smoker. After reading a ton about Ugly...
