Question on sealing wood on smokehouse

Linseed Oil worked good, and Thompson's makes a whole line of wood sealers, I used a deck sealer on the outside of mine, mostly because they sell it in 1gal cans, and its non-toxic, the outside can be sealed with any wood sealer though. Mostly depends on how you want it to look. There are...

Source for cast iron feed doors

You can find those Barrel stove kits at your local farm supply stores and even Menards and Lowes from time to time, that way you can get your hands on them and look at them prior to purchase, they are all pretty similar, and then you can pick the one you like from local/online.

Oh forgot to mention, get a GOOD temp gauge, been through 3 from walmart on the door and none of them accurate to suit me.

    5Oaks Smoker Build

I first built the frame from 2x4 lumber, then enclosed the smoke chamber with 1/2" plywood and sealed it up. I then lined the firebox area with 1/2" Duroc instead of plywood. Then I sandwiched 2 layers of insulation board in the frame cavities, the outer shell is 1/8" finish plywood. My cook...

    5Oaks Smoker Build

5 hours in, IT 168* in the breast. Ham came out with an awesome glaze and killer flavor, my boy didn't want to share.. Bird had a nice thick smoke ring. Forgot to get pics after letting it rest, we pretty much inhaled it that night.

    Smoking Bags

Call your local meat market, it comes in a roll, most of them will sell it to you by the ft. especially if you are getting meat also.

    5Oaks Smoker Build

Repairs all done, and I've been itching to smoke, just haven't had the time, and haven't gotten a deer yet this year. Called the local meat market and I'm picking up a ham and some stocking material today! Got a 12# Bird thawing in the shop fridge. My goal is to start the brine on the Bird...

    1950's fridge insulation

From the builds I have seen, some use unbacked fiberglass with no problems, just make sure it doesn't have the paper backing, that will smell, plus it has an adhesive to make it stick to the fiberglass thats not real good for you.

Building a whole hog smoker on the cheap. What are your thoughts? (Q-view)

I'm not an expert on metal smokers, but the UDS works in part because of its smaller size. As long as you don't mind tending it, it will probably work, you will want to be careful cutting that thin metal so it doesn't warp, grinder over torch will be best IMO. Dave would be best since he has...

    FIRE PIT DOOR

Wow that ones is pricey.... Here is a link to one very similar to the one we have on our stove, if the door isn't airtight enough for you, you can always get a high temp rope gasket to go around the door...

    FIRE PIT DOOR

No they aren't airtight, but if you don't have some air coming into your firebox your fire will go out. Most have sliding vents of one type or another on the front to allow even more air in, for a bigger fire, or to control your fire. And even though its not airtight, when we close the vents on...

    FIRE PIT DOOR

They have several different styles of doors for the barrel kits on ebay, you could also check your local farm supply store, most of them sell barrel kits locally. The barrel kit door seems to work well, and no sense re-inventing the wheel here, they have vents and are usually made from cast iron.

    My insulated plywood/propane smoker

1/4" is a little thin, when I did mine, I didn't use anything less than 1/2" and 2x4 posts, you will find you need the rigidity or it will twist some and the doors will not open/close or seal properly.

How does that element work? Would like some info on that one, I like the small profile, might work well in my build. Can't seem to find it online though.

Building a whole hog smoker on the cheap. What are your thoughts? (Q-view)

Dave posted some pictures of a hog roaster he built in this other thread about the same thing. http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/166947/totally-lost

    totally lost

Dave and RW would know better, but I would think you could look at the Reverse Flow designs, I am thinking a regular side box would be too hard to regulate even heat in something big enough for a hog roast. Dave has posted several drawings on those Reverse Flow Build threads, showing how big...

    totally lost

You just wanting something to roast a pig in? Or a general smoker? If its just for a pig, and you will reuse it, we bought a China Box Pig Roaster, they could be easily made if you had the supplies, but you might look up the design. Its basically a metal lined plywood box with a metal lid, and...
