My pipe has turned up, 6" internal diameter, 3/16 wall thickness (5mm).
I think it may be too heavy to lift up as a hinged chimney, I may need a rethink.
I also measured the height of my workshop door with that in mind, but I think It would look too short. (I have a low door)
I think it will be hinged, I like the twist lock idea, that would be very easy to use.
I'd need to put a cap over it when folded away to keep the rain out.
Is the prefered...
Yeah, we thought about hinged, it would lay down nice across the top. We hadn't thought about the latches, it was cold and a Sunday lunch time so we accidently went to the pub to sit in front of the fire with a beer.
They are working ok, even if I put the flange on the outside. Its just a bit close to scraping for my liking. I'd like the pin a bit closer to the chamber and further away from the cut to make the door work better.
I just had to knock something up so I could make the cut. Better ones will...
Last night I filled it with water and cut it.
I got a bit wet while cutting, but there was no danger of explosion or heating up and warping.
I think I'm going to redo the hinges, the current ones are only tacked on.
I was going to put the flange on the inside of the cook chamber, I think they look cleaner on the outside thay way.
It is slightly more difficult to weld on though as i'd be working from the inside.
Not totally sure what the axle came off, but its military.
Today I made some hinges, just basic ones.
As per suggersions I'm going to cut along the top, mount the hinges, then cut the rest of the door.
I may cut it open in the next few days, and get properly started! I just need to get some hinges made before I cut.
I have 5 wheels coming for it, all with ok tyres.
The axle is off a military trailer. Rated at 1500kg. All the brakes are like new, so I'm guessing it wasn't used much.
I'm not...
I was going to make the stack using either 6" or 8" pipe.
I've made the door smaller,
I picked up the axle today. It takes Land Rover wheels which are 16" standard.
Hi Danny,
Thanks for your input, and everyone else's.
The smaller door suggestions is a very good idea. I wont then have to worry about those bosses straight away and could maybe re use them like you say
The door will be lighter so less counter weights etc. Less heat loss, better recovery...
I was going to notch those top boss's out first, cut the door and then fill them in at a later date.
I did think about turning it over, but I have a large drain one in the bottom, and legs to cut off if I wanted to turn it over.
Is that the preferred method?
My thinking was 3 bosses at the...
I've built a smoker out of oil drums before, this is my first out of a large propane tank.
I have cut up smaller tanks before, but this is the largest by far.
I've had the tank vented for a few weeks. I've washed it out once already. I'm going to add 20 litres of liquid soap (made from waste...
My 1st question:-
The calculator gives me a chimney length of 56". Is this measurement from the top of my cooking chamber? or is the measurement from where the smoke enters the cooking chamber, and chamber is included as part of the exhaust for measurement?
Basically do I need a bit of pipe...
Hi all,
I'm an engineer from Suffolk, England.
I've built one smoker for my local Pub, and am now about to build a much larger trailer rig for shows and festivals.
Best Regards
Michael
Hi all from England,
I am now about to undertake a reverse flow smoker, American style.
Hopefully I've attached pictures of my propne tank.

I'm planning on filling the tank with water and cutting the 1/4 opening with a petrol disc cutter.
I have a milatry axle...
