And FYI the ambient temp on the meater will almost always show as lower than the set temp on your smoker. The proximity to the cold meat has an effect.
It’s been working great for me with steaks. I did an ice bath test with a couple other thermometers and it was dead on.

I visit Pelletfan occasionally and can’t say I have any problems with it.
Some of the Facebook groups can be protective of their brand though. I’m a member of two RecTec groups on FB and one will not allow critical posts while the other is open to anything.
Make sure grease isn’t getting past the drip tray. If you have food all the way to the edge of the grates, grease will drip down into the barrel.

Pitboss Hickory is a blend. 100% natural just means it's real wood. I believe they are 30% hickory and 70% alder or oak. And $9.98/20lbs is not a good deal.
Try the Pit Boss Comp Blend and if you like it you've got a good source at Lowes.
I’m not sure about the Traeger version but RecTec says not to use their cold weather cover at grill temps over 350.
I believe it will damage the finish on the cover and/or grill.
Sounds awfully complicated. I've been using a RecTec 680 for two years with no explosions and lots of different pellets. I clean the fire pot every 5 or so cooks. Lid closed, turn it on and set the temp.
