Costco Louisiana Grills Series 7 Pellet Vertical Smoker

Food looks good. Why do they put windows on smokers?

    Meater

Yes it is over 200. 2012 sounds right.

    Meater

Use a potato. The internal limit is 200F. And FYI the ambient temp on the meater will almost always show as lower than the set temp on your smoker. The proximity to the cold meat has an effect.

    Meater

It’s been working great for me with steaks. I did an ice bath test with a couple other thermometers and it was dead on. I like that the app warns you to remove a few degrees before it hits target temp to allow for the carryover.

    RecTec or big box store?

You get what you pay for in most cases. If the wife approved it then the answer is clear.

    Not much smoke flavor

Use 100% hickory pellets. I’ve used those Pit Boss comp blend pellets before and was not impressed. I came from a MES and you will not duplicate that flavor with a pellet smoker. IMO the smoke the MES imparts is stronger but more like an ash tray, bitter. You’ll get good smoke flavor with a...

    Pelletheads

I visit Pelletfan occasionally and can’t say I have any problems with it. Some of the Facebook groups can be protective of their brand though. I’m a member of two RecTec groups on FB and one will not allow critical posts while the other is open to anything.

Trying to decide on which pellet grill

I get plenty of smoke flavor using 100% hickory pellets in my RecTec.

    Paint Peeling on Rec-Tec

Make sure grease isn’t getting past the drip tray. If you have food all the way to the edge of the grates, grease will drip down into the barrel. Make sure your smoker is level and grease will run to the bucket. I had to raise the left side of mine as my patio slopes away from my house. Clean...

    What pellets do you buy?

Well it is a blend... You can get 100% Apple or Cherry from LJ. http://bbqlumberjack.com/100-apple/ Traeger pellets are overpriced IMO.

    Pellets?

$46 for 40 pounds is insane. Shipping cost is included in that eBay price. I pay $17 locally. Even less with a group buy.

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

1 pound per hour at 225 is pretty typical. You might want to get a welding blanket for the winter months.

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

I have a different pellet smoker but I don’t use anywhere close to 10 pounds in 3-4 hours at those temps. I believe the hopper on the LG is 12 pounds?

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

Pitboss Hickory is a blend. 100% natural just means it's real wood. I believe they are 30% hickory and 70% alder or oak. And $9.98/20lbs is not a good deal. Try the Pit Boss Comp Blend and if you like it you've got a good source at Lowes.

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

I just don’t get any smoke flavor from blends. I prefer 100% wood varieties like Lumberjack 100% hickory.

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

With Costco's generous return policy I don't think you can go wrong at that price.

New LG Champion Smoker with cold smoke offset

4 hours seems extreme? What temp were you running and what was the outside temp?

Insulated Blanket - When does it make sense?

I’m not sure about the Traeger version but RecTec says not to use their cold weather cover at grill temps over 350. I believe it will damage the finish on the cover and/or grill.

Big Horn (Pit Boss 820) Startup Explosions

Sounds awfully complicated. I've been using a RecTec 680 for two years with no explosions and lots of different pellets. I clean the fire pot every 5 or so cooks. Lid closed, turn it on and set the temp.

    RecTec RT-340

The only issue would be rain possibly getting in during a cook but they sell stainless vents if you think it would be a concern.
