You can buy the element from 3rd party for less than half that price. I don't have the link, but I can find it if needed. Seriously, there is only one thing on the MES that isn't replaceable by 3rd party, the controller. I haven't priced the controller from Masterbuilt it might not be that...
Welcome to the MES / SMF family!
The Electric forum here at SMF is the unofficial home for MES owners, so you found the right place to seek answers and encouragement.
Here is a link to new MES owner tips.
Below is what I use and it works ok. The advantages over a piece of tile are weight, weight of tile when those metal parts heat and cool , heat and cool may eventually cause stress. The alum cookie sheet is light. The size is perfect.
Here is a post I wrote about it.
MES New Owner Tips:
• Season it. (Many spray the inside with PAM)
• No extension cords, unless it is 12 ga or heavier
• Spray your racks with PAM prior to smoke (makes cleanup easier).
• Use alum foil on the water pan and drain pan, again for easier cleanup.
• Manual says preheating isn't...
h22lude, I would be careful about operating in the rain unless your MES is in a covered area. The back is NOT sealed, water can penetrate the back and foul wiring/connectors/insulation. Of course the digital controller needs to be protected. I will say that for several years I used mine under...
If your capable of rewiring, then you might want to hold up on buying a new MES. Find out how much the controller is, and other parts, you can even go 3rd party. Bottom line the best thing about the MES is it's insulated cabinet, you have that, you can buy new elements, controllers, from 3rd...
Kevin, you bad luck is due to luck of the draw, it happens! Two things are known:
1st Masterbuilt makes a very good smoker ala MES either 30 or 40.
2nd Amazon is a great vendor, usually willing to do what it takes to make the customer happy.
The villain sounds like the transport carrier...
CONGRATS on your NEW MES, Making it Easy to Smoke Q!
I post the tips below for newbies, it attempts to answer some of the common questions that are asked, hopefully it helps.
MES New Owner Tips:
Collected from input of many MES owners, some may seem a bit dated due to new MES with higher watt...
Get a remote probe digital thermometer, like a Taylor, or my preference a Maverick. I used taylors for year have 3 of them. My MES 40 is off 15 deg high. So when it says 225 it is really 240. Even a cheap analog oven thermometer is better than nothing to cross check your MES temps.
You...
Sorry but I don't agree with the comments opposed to soaking wood chips. I've done it both ways and there is no difference. However my MES40 is old style
with 800 watt element and a properly designed/functioning chip tray that sits almost on top of element. Newer models have a poorly designed...
Not all extension cords are equal. I list in my new own tips not to use an extension cord, unless 12 ga, some 14 ga cords work fine too. However some cords listed as 14 ga have not worked, I have one of them, it will not work it is 50' long. Several have confirmed problems with extension...

PS don't use an extension cord unless 12 ga. You can get away with a 14 ga for short distance maybe.
deepholedriller, you might want to give my solution a try. Although you have the MES30 and I have the MES40 we both have 800 watt elements. Last week I smoked two pork butts and got 8-9 hours smoke. I'm not sure which because I went to bed at 7 hours smoke and there was still about 1/2 row to...
