    500 gallon build

Ok , so if I am reading your dimensions correctly, the rf plate is setting on the top of your fb opening (8” off the bottom of the tank) and it tapers down and terminates 6” off the bottom of the cc. If that is correct, the area of the opening at the end of the rf is effectively smaller than...

Offset chamber to firebox Bell to Bell joining

Shaping the paper around the bell will work....provided both bell ends are the same dimensions and the paper can be aligned at the same points on both tanks. Using a flat template allows me to form a single plane template of the hole which I find easier to orient on a dissimilar bell. Doesn‘t...

Offset chamber to firebox Bell to Bell joining

you will have much better luck shaping, cutting and tracing if you use a large piece of stiff cardboard or 1/4” plywood to build the template.

First time build can your cook chamber be too thick

Never mind, a closer look and I can see it is an exterior lining.

First time build can your cook chamber be too thick

I see some green inside the pipe in one of your pics. Is that lining material? Some linings can be a real pia to remove.

    Questions/advice? 275 tank

275 gallon tanks ma ok e great hog roasters (vertical) and decent large, open face grills (horizontal) . They can be made into smokers, but the light gauge metal is a pia to work with., but not impossible. I have built several hog roasters out of old ovals. I tried both horizontal and...

Optimal Fire Management Approach for Stick Burner

You have a 25 year relationship with that cooker and it sounds like you have refined a process that works for both you and the smoker. Therefore, I see no reason to change simply because others in the herd are telling everyone to run in a different direction. On the other hand, if you are not...

First time build can your cook chamber be too thick

1” is pretty heft, however it is doable...as edge indicated, you will need to allow more time and fuel to get the thing stabilized, but once it is stabilized, and with proper fire management, it should capable of taking on a slug of cold meat, hold a fairly tight range and have a quick recovery...

    I need wood (Miami,FL)

You might have too bite the bullet and season your own....try finding a reputable local tree trimmer, let him/her know you are in the market for citrus, olive, etc. Assuming you can come to an acceptable agreement, chances are pretty good you will not have to wait very long for the first delivery.

Reverse Flow smoker, door stuck when hot

Good pics! I would probably start with the door hinges. Looks to me like the hinge configuration is allowing the door to twist as it heats up. There are a few quick fixes, but don‘t try to do them all at once. 1). while the lid is cold, remove the hinge bolts and recenter the lid. Then...

Reverse Flow smoker, door stuck when hot

Will need some pics of the door, flanges and hinges. You indicated it worked ok on the first cook, but not the second? Were you cooking at the same temp both times? Once you post the pics, it should be pretty easy to diagnose. Luckily you are dealing with a smoker and not a Swiss...

    Rusty offset smoker restoration

When dealing with scale rust, it is much easier and faster to use a needle scaler (available at pretty much any discount tool supplier) Save the grinder and sanding wheels for cleanup once the scale is off. So far as surface prep on the outside surfaces, acetone would be the preferred...

    New r/f build

I ran into the same situation on one of my very first builds.... it drove me nuts for a couple months and I was ready to scrap it until a local blacksmith took a look and pointed out a couple minor mistakes that were choking air flow through the cc. Given your stack and opening between the...

Vertical Reverse Flow Build (picture heavy)

Nice looking build! A 30 degree swing in an empty smoker wouldn’t surprise me at all. Have you experimented or measured temps with the racks loaded? It is surprising what well placed product can do to the internal temps. Sometimes it is a lot easier to leverage the cooker’s “quirks” rather...

    Old Tank, New Smoker

Looking good. Guessing by the methods you are using to layout things, perhaps you have had a bit of fabrication/machining training?

    Order of operations

Done it both ways....building it on the ground provides a lot of more flexibility during the build. Mounting it after the build also lets you optimize the center of gravity and weight distribution on the trailer axels.

1st Smoker Build - Octagon Reverse Flow Smoker

Ditto what clayshooter said....given your limited fabrication resources, it would be wise to embrace the ”KISS” strategy and start with an existing tank....something in the 120-250 range will be a challenge without lifting equipment, but still doable and yet relatively safe with a little...

    Contour

old school method is to hold a piece of cardboard against the tank at the point you would like to attach plenum. Trace the tank contour onto the cardboard, cut it out and repeat until the cardboard template fits snugly onto the tank contour. I mock up the entire plenum with cardboard and...

Great auction score of 1/4" sheet steel!

Hey Lance, next time you are faced with dragging heavy sheets around on hard surfaces, consider laying a few sections of black pipe down and simply “roll“ the sheets over the pipe. Granted, black pipe on the floor will never replace the convenience and safety of a crane, fork truck, skid...
