    What size of heating element

Since your smoker is about twice the size of a home oven just about as well insulated and operating at the same temperatures.  My guess is you need twice the normal wattage. It seems normal is 2500 watts. I believe to get 5000 Watts you will need 21 amps requiring a 30 amp 240 volt circuit or...

    MES tripping GFCI recepticle

You will find dozens of similar threads on this form. Sometimes if you dry it by running it on a non GFIC circuit after an hour or 2 it will work correctly. If not most likely you will find that masterbuilt is unable to work out a way to safe reliable way to connect wires to heaters. Please...

    Masterbuilt stops heating

You will get more responses if you post in the “Electric Smoker “forum It is very likely your problem is how the wires are connected to the heating element. Apparently MES is unable to find reliable way to connect their elements to wires. There are dozens of posts on this subject like this...

    Problems with MES

This statement is only true when a good ground is present. Sadly many older homes never had grounded circuits. Other times the grounds were never connected. All too often the ground plug on the device or an extension cord is missing.  Walta

Needing info on taling trees apart

I have not used this app but I have heard good things about Leafsnap app. Look in the app shop on your phone. Please be aware it is against the rules of this form to post links off of this site. In my neighborhood this time of year trees must be ID by their bark, Google is you friend. If the...

MES 40" Gen 2 Electrical odor

Before you call MES go to Lowes with the smoker and your receipt. If you ask nicely and you get the right clerk at the right time there is a good chance they will give you refund to your credit card or store credit.  Walta

Need new Electric Smoker ideas after defective 40" MES

Smokin-it is the one I was look at buying to replace my MES. I have not seen reported failure on this form. Please understand how many do they sell one for every thousand MESs? But it is a lot more money and you will not find it in your local big box store. Walta

    need pid 220 wiring help

I agree with Dward51 a heating element is a pure resistor and as such frequency is not a factor. Since one way to express OHMs law is Wattage =( Voltage X Voltage) / Resistance, one half the voltage = one forth the wattage. Heating elements like all resistors have 2 important ratings 1 is the...

MES 40" Gen 2 Electrical odor

You should be very careful with MES as they often fail in ways where fire seems to be a real possibility. See this post and dozens like it. http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/234105/major-mes-fail Given how common failure is I would not operate a MES under a roof. Also please be certain your...

    Problems with MES

Jted What I am saying, MB sold a lot smokers, maybe 5 million. Many of them fail. Of the purchasers I personally know we are at 100% failure. I know it is a small unrepresentative sample. Let’s say 10% fail with leakage current. That is 500000 dangerous smokers. Let’s say 50% do not use a GFIC...

    Problems with MES

Dr K I say you should do the inspection if you have a problem give Master Built a chance to make it right they have replaced many out of warranty units for no charge. If not I have repaired a few with this procedure. 1 Remove the element cover. 2 Remove damaged element from smoker.   3...

    Problems with MES

Please the understand the circuit tripped because not all of the electric leaving the GFIC is returning in the correct wire. The GFIC tripped because possibility of electrocution is present. Be aware using the non GFIC outlet could be dangerous if that outlet is not properly grounded or the...

MES 40" Temperature Issues with Auber PID & Mailbox Mod

From your answers it seems your new PID is faulty. I would do one more test before I sent it back. Try plugging toaster oven into your PID with the probe inside and see if works. If not ask for a new PID. Walta

    Fast Smoked Brisket ????

I am guessing the brisket was warmer than 35° when the timer started and this brisket has a larger surface area most if it was not butterflied. Walta

    Masterbuilt question

I think masterbuilt designed the controls to have this swing from the set point deliberately for 2 reasons.  If the smoker were controlled very closely the heaters run cycles would be short and frequent. 1The frequent cycles would shorten the number of hours the smoker will work before the...

MES 40" Temperature Issues with Auber PID & Mailbox Mod

When you had it set for 260 and the cabinet temperature never got over 235. 1 Was your PID cycling the heater on and off? 2 Was the PID probe completely inside the smoker cabinet? 3 Was the PID probe touching anything but air? 4 Have you put the tip of the probe in boiling water and see if...

MES control pannel freezes in cold!

Try bringing the hole smoker indoors once it is up to room temperature take it back outdoors and start smoking before the MES cools off. I believe the computer in the MES is programmed to only operate above a certain temp. Maybe 32°?  Walta

    converting MES to a pid

When you wire up your heater it would be a good idea to reuse the safety thermostat. If will cut off the heater if your control gets stuck on and the smoker temp gets over 300° before it starts a fire. Walta

    converting MES to a pid

If you think the problem is the control board or the temp sensor then the way I installed my PID would work for you. http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/237746/mes-pid-controller-no-drilling-of-rivets-no-high-voltage-wiring-required#post_1486573 Walta
