    Electric "module" in propane unit.

I haven't ordered it yet, but I'm definitely going to. I like the ability to set and forget. Think it would be hard to get the 10 degree increments dialed in with the dial in the hotplate. Especially for sticks and sausage, don't want to go over 170.

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Layer two is done, mostly. Still need to cut out the vent opening, but the rest of the fitting and stitching is done. Probably going to sew in some velcro or use press in buttons to make the closures instead of the binder clips. I'm going to make some windscreens for the legs out of some sheet...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

So the latest test was to get the first layer of insulation on the cabinet. While I was doing that I put the hotplate in. Cabinet temp maxed out at 235, that was without the doors done, but they are double layer metal, so it probably won't matter too much over all. But it was 60 outside today...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

That's weird, my store had about 10 on the shelf. Supposed to be windy, but close to 50 tomorrow. So maybe I'll get a chance to check some pit temps outside while working on the insulation.

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Mainstays Walmart brand. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Single-Burner/53264468 It is simple, nothing to it. The white wire goes to the burner and taps to the light. The red goes to the dial first then out to the burner and the light. That's all there is to it.

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

So with the oven door closed it got to 250 before the thermal cutoff inside shut it down. I had opened it up before I started playing around. I didn't see a thermal cutoff mounted to cabinet housing so I'm guessing it's the little red thing on the dial that I circled in red in the pic. So I...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

When you go past about 1500w on 120v you need to go to to a higher amp breaker. I only have 15 amp service in my house, if I recall you need 20amp for a large element like that. That being said, I stopped and picked up the $10 1000w hotplate from wally world yesterday. Been working on some...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

I'll check it out further when I have some time to do the ohms law calculation. But I think you only get a 1/4 of the wattage running at half the voltage. So you'd only be getting 650 out of that without running a 220 outlet to the unit. I'm guessing that's a 220 element because it's for an...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

Hotplate seems the easiest to take in and out for me. I'm going to start there and see what happens after some bench testing. Nice days are about gone here in the midwest, so I may play around all winter with it. Who knows. I like to tinker. I'm not keen on spending 200 bucks on the plug and...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

I went looking for it and couldn't find it so I must have junked it. Meh, oh well. A new 1000w is like 10 bucks at walmart.

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

I have to measure the actual internal dimensions of the box tomorrow. I'm going by size of a spare rack I have in the house. It's 13.5x13.5ish, so I probably have about 15x15 actual dimensions. It would likely fit, but it would be tight and not an easy to remove part once it was installed. I'm...

    Electric "module" in propane unit.

So after doing a batch of snack sticks in my 30" Masterbuilt dual fuel I got to thinking. I have a needle valve but the wind was ridiculous so keeping low temps with such a small flame was kind of a chore, even after making a wind block around most of the bottom I had to babysit the thing A LOT...

    New Masterbuilt portable/camping smoker!

I'm using a cheapie char broil pellet tube on clearance from Target. You can see it laying down in the bottom right of my pic above. I modified it a bit by drilling a bunch of holes in the top cap. The chip tray is so small I only used it during seasoning, so higher temps than normal smoking...

    Beef Sticks

I did make the gun and try a batch over the weekend. I stuffed the night before and smoked the next day. They turned out great, but I'm in the market for a crank stuffer before my next large batch.

    Northern Tool Huntrite Stuffer?

Man, I haven't been getting email notifications from this post. Thanks for the tips. I wouldn't have had any clue that using the bigger stuffer for sticks would cause a problem. I'll probably pick up the new NT one before my next batch.

    Juicy meat when stuffing

So I tried my first ever batch of sticks this weekend. I used the Big Casino recipe I found here. Followed the recipe exactly. I mixed up the meat and put it in the fridge. I was going to let it set overnight and stuff then smoke in the morning. Then I started reading about the meat possibly...

    Northern Tool Huntrite Stuffer?

I had these pics on my phone so I decided to make another post with some pics. My DIY stuffer. Stuffed collagen casings. Finished product. So while this all turned out well, there was one hiccup I'm going to make another thread about. I really think before I do another batch bigger than...

    Northern Tool Huntrite Stuffer?

So I tried my first batch of sticks this weekend with a DIY stuffer gun. They turned out great, in my opinion, but there was a lot of fiddling around. I made 3 "magazines" tubes for meat but still had to change and restuff, 5 pound batch took about 4.5ish tubes. This got me looking into 5 pound...

    Beef Sticks first time

I know this is an older thread, sorry for the nrecropost, I did this that on a forgot search. I'm currently building a diy jerky cannon to try my hand at some sticks. I have that same smoker, what did you use for a hanger, is that just wood dowels? Also how have you found the gasser to work on...

    Beef Sticks

I just bought the parts last night to make a Diy caulk gun stuffer. Wanted to try making sticks without all the grinder and other equipment costs. This recipe might be a great starting point. Thanks!
