Thanks David - I definitely have the caution part down pat lol!
And I definitely fall in the "measure twice (or 3 times) cut once" camp...might be guilty of over thinking occasionally. :emoji_wink:

True words for certain! I own the fact that I'm a slow pit builder, and that more skilled fabricators could probably do it faster, but I certainly take the extra time at every step to be sure I've thought it through.
Thank you David!
Thank you Brother!
Thanks Mike...
Hi Tom! That FB is a thing of beauty!
A couple of important calculations in this kind of build are the ratio of volumes between the FB and the cook chamber...which, since you've already built the FB, that's too late to change. The other is the total area of the opening between the FB and...
Made some progress today - enough for another short update...
So as I mentioned on Sunday, I got the top angle iron rail all measured, cut and clamped in place to fit. Before I welded this out, I needed to cut a 2-inch notch in the end pieces - directly in the center - to fit the vertical...
Happy Weekend, Friends! Hope y'all's Thanksgiving was as enjoyable as ours was!
Time for a short update. I got in the shop a couple times, both before and after the holiday festivities. A lot of the work was stuff that doesn't show much progress - like welding out all the seams in those...
Definitely something to consider - Thanks Chris!
Thank you sir!
In a word...Yes. Jim wants to line both the floor and the walls with fire brick. Haven't gotten to that point yet, but I'll fabricate a "channel" (for lack of a better word) around the upper part of the vertical walls to...
A quick update! Things are progressing slowly but surely.
So I got the square tubing frame for the bottom of the main body all welded. Jim wants a trap door in the floor for ash removal, so I went ahead and got that cut into the floor panel.
Next it was time to start tacking the back...
I don't remember where I saw it, but I do recall seeing pics of a Santa Maria-type grill that had a cabinet built around the sides. The grate would still go up and down, but it really wasn't a true Santa Maria grill because it wasn't open air cooking. There's also a line of cookers made by a...
I use C25 - a mix of 25% CO2 and 75% Argon. It's the least expensive option around here, and is kinda the "go to" shielding gas for most general purpose mig welding of mild carbon steel.
Thanks fellas!

A quick update:
After spending some time using my laser, a tape measure, and a big square to lay out the dimensional cuts, I got the plate steel all cut up into panels today - for the main body of the grill.
The bottom (floor) panel is back left, with the front and back panels next. And the...
Thanks Sandy!
LOL thank you W! Yeah this one is at least road worthy. My old trailer, I might have been pretty nervous trying to pull it on a long haul!
Thanks gents!
