The thickness of the pipe and plates used is 3/8".
While you may not be interested in changing professions, you're never too old to learn something new! I teach welding at the community college and regularly have students in their 50's and 60's take the class simply as hobbyists. Most of the...
Thank you! Yes, we have a full blown industrial paint shop where I work. Couple of 12 packs and they are going to blast it and spray it with a high temp black. Hoping to get squeezed in next week.

Last details added today and now fabrication is COMPLETE! I used the spring handles from some old chipping hammers for the latch on the firebox door and the exhaust damper. One last look before she heads off to paint!

Tomorrow will be my final day of fabrication for my first Smoker Build! All that's left is to fab up the adjustment arm on the damper for the exhaust. Today I welded in some threaded couplings for the thermometers, added some weather protecting "eyebrows" above the therms, made some utility...
Just a small update but progress is progress! Got the Cook Chamber grates fabbed up and installed. All that's left is to install the thermometers, fab up the damper on the exhaust, then it's off to paint!

Got the much needed counterweight fabbed up and welded in place. There was a bit of guesswork involved here but the lid is now much easier to open. BONUS: The counterweight pulls double duty as my lid stop!

And to think that I held back and decided NOT to use .045 FCAW128514. I really do love welding and fabricating though. After looking at so many cheaply slapped together big box smokers, I knew that I was going big or not at all. I like the FB idea! I'll check in to it128516

PROGRESS REPORT! Monday Funday! Glad to get back at it after the weekend! So stoked as it's actually looking like a smoker now! Fabbed up the hinges, handle and finished the outer gasket. Gonna need to plan a counterweight...that lid is HEAVY!

Made some great progress on the Smoker today. Clockwise from top left: Brackets for lid handle. Welding in the front of the fire box. Plasma cutting the lid on the Cook Chamber. Opening to the firebox welded and ground smooth.

Thanks for the tip! I'm constantly thinking about the build, always fearing that my order of operations is going to screw me. Tips like this are super helpful!
