    New smoker gets an "A"

Congrats on the new smoker. Those heavy gauge steel smoker don't take much to keep em up to temp. I too was quite surprised how little it takes.

    Charcoal Advise Please

I started doing the same with my Horizon. After ever cook I rub the fire box down with el-cheapo lard. Beats the heck out of trying to keep paint on it. It looks pretty darn good too.

    Charcoal Advise Please

Lump last longer than briquettes? Not the lump (Royal Oak) and briquettes (Stubbs) I use. I get much longer burns from the Stubbs. I have also used Kingsford blue bag that I got long burn times out of. I do use lump at times but for the most part, in the WSM, I use briquettes.

Could it be the Little Chief smoker?

    is this a plan

The Kingsford Comp is suppose to be a better quality briquette. I've never used it but there are some members that do with great success. You can indeed use the Minion method with lump.

    is this a plan

He's not the only one that prefers briquettes over lump in the WSM. I get really nice long burns using Stumps and believe me I can get the smoker as hot as I want doing so. Your method works for you, his (mine too) works for us.

    is this a plan

With the WSM you shouldn't have any problems carrying out your plans. Shoot for a temp (smoker temp) of 240 to 250 and your good to go.
